Happy World Bee Day 2026 🐝

🐝 As always we are delighted to be partnered with which is a beekeeping company and community run by Kyle Petrie, Mark Earley and Jack McGrath, three beekeepers based in Dublin.

🐝 The simple focus of OpenHive is to harness a combined passion for beekeeping with a need for environmental sustainability.

🐝 Launched in November 2019 OpenHive rears and breeds Irish black honeybees. To support this process OpenHive sells locally-produced 100% raw Irish honey from apiaries in Dublin and Wicklow, which we are proud to carry in store 🍯

🐝 Native Irish honeybees are one of Ireland’s most important and vulnerable pollinators.

With only 11% forestry cover in Ireland and just 2% of that being native woodland where honeybees can naturally nest; habitat loss continues to threaten the future of our bees.

Recently recognised as a unique ecotype of the European Dark Honey Bee, Ireland’s native honeybee is part of our natural heritage and our hive partners are playing a direct role in securing its future.

Ireland has 102 species of bee and they all need our help. Ireland has only one native honey bee, which is threatened by the importation of foreign honey bees that endanger its genetic lineage.

Our native bee has been designated as a unique eco type, locally adapted to our damp Irish climate.

OpenHive is doing phenomenal work in it's mission to conserve our native Irish honey bee 🐝
