Join us on October 6th for a fascinating lecture-recital with Thomas Ranjō, introducing the history, music and performance traditions of the Satsumabiwa, the traditional Japanese lute associated with the samurai.

Originating in Kyushu in southern Japan, Satsumabiwa combines narrative, sung or recited text, and instrumental interludes. Its narratives, sometimes described as “noble tales,” retell the lives of tragic and heroic figures, evoke the emotions associated with the passing of the seasons, and express in song the moral ideals traditionally associated with the samurai.

In this special lecture recital, Thomas Ranjō will explore the instrument’s history and musical traditions through discussion and live performance.

📅 Tuesday, 6th October
🕐 13:00 – 14:00
📍 Organ Room, East Quad, Grangegorman, D07 XFF2
🎟️ Free Admission – All Welcome!

Come and discover the distinctive sound, history and storytelling tradition of one of Japan’s remarkable musical instruments.

Thomas Ranjō began studying Satsumabiwa with the late master Fumon Yoshinori (1911–2003) in 1995 and has since performed and lectured internationally. Most recently, he completed a tour of Japan with Irish harpist Tríona Marshall, supported by Culture Ireland

🎷 Introducing our soloist for TU Dublin Philharmonic: An Exhibition of Sound!

We’re thrilled to welcome Anthony Vala to the stage this Saturday for Paul Creston’s exhilarating Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra; a work of rhythmic energy, lyricism and virtuosity that showcases the remarkable expressive range of the saxophone.

Anthony Vala is a fourth-year saxophonist at the TU Dublin Conservatoire, studying under Brendan Doyle and Kevin Hanafin.

An experienced soloist and ensemble musician, Anthony has performed throughout Ireland, including a lunchtime recital at Boyle Arts Festival, the Feis Ceoil Gala Concert at the National Concert Hall, and several lunchtime recitals within the Conservatoire. Some of his competition success includes winning the TU Dublin Concerto Competition, First Prize in the Senior Saxophone competition in Feis Ceoil, and competing as a semi-finalist in the Freemasons Young Musician of the Year Competition in 2025. Anthony was also one of two music students awarded the Jones Engineering Scholarship this year. As an ensemble musician, Anthony has worked with the National Symphony Orchestra, Irish Youth Wind Ensemble, and the TU Dublin Philharmonic, serving as the principal saxophonist in their 2025 to 2026 season.

Anthony has a keen interest in contemporary music and is a member of the TU Dublin Contemporary Music Ensemble, and of the Faba Trio. Through these two ensembles, Anthony has performed several world and Irish premiers of works, with the aim of expanding the repertoire and brining new music to a wider audience.

What better way to begin the academic year than an inspiring conversation with Daryl McCormack?

Internationally celebrated actor and TU Dublin Conservatoire alumnus Daryl McCormack revisited our Drama Department for first-year Induction Day. Daryl spoke of his experiences as a student; his career path; the differences the actor experiences between the various dramatic mediums; his preparation process; and provided an abundance of sage advice for the students. It was an absolute pleasure to have you back Daryl!

Since graduating from our Drama Department in 2014, Daryl has appeared in Peaky Blinders, Bad Sisters, The Woman in the Wall, and the star-studded blockbuster Wake Up, Dead Man (A Knives Out Mystery) alongside Glenn Close, Daniel Craig, Josh Brolin, Josh O'Connor and Andrew Scott. We look forward to seeing him as Mr. Bingley in Pride and Prejudice this Autumn on Netflix!
