Dear Friends
I thought you might be interested to know that after the 14th count in the NUI Galway election there were only five candidates still "standing". The fifth ranked candidate was then eliminated and the four remaining candidates were declared elected.
I was that fifth candidate.
I have asked NUI Galway to let me know what the number of votes were for the other candidates at that stage.
I will keep you updated.
Stay safe.
Mike
Dear Friends,
I have just received the outline details of the results of the election.
I am disappointed to tell you that I was not successful. I will be given more details of my own vote later but, for now, the following is all the information given to us.
Total Poll was 4,264
There were 13 invalid votes
The Quota was 852.801
No-one was elected on the first count.
Counts 2-14 consisted of eliminations.
On the final count (14th) the following were deemed elected; Ms.Brown, Mr. Fottrell, Mr. Ahern, Ms. NĂ Chonghaile.
I want to thank you all very sincerely for the wonderful support and friendship you gave to me over the past six weeks. As I have already said, it was hugely affirming and gave me a great sense of the continuity and longevity of great friendships and camaraderie going back more decades than many of us will wish to admit to.
I most especially want to thank my Proposer, the incomparable Brendan (Speedie) Smith, my seconder, the deservedly world-renowned Garry Hynes and to the other two members of my team of closest supporters, best advisors and all-round great people to have on your side; Hubert McDermott and Patsy McGarry. I owe each one of them a great debt of gratitude.
For Pandemic-related reasons the "bring-your-own-flagon" party in Peter Michael's is not going ahead and the house party in Hazel Park is deferred.
Be good. Stay safe.
Mike
Dear Friends,
Well it's nearly time!
The voting will commence on Monday at 9am and conclude on Tuesday at noon.
Please plan a specific time in your diary to vote. It'd be tragic if you remembered at 12:01 on Tuesday!
Now would also be a good time to make contact with (or to again contact) any Galway graduates you know to remind them to vote. You could send them this link;mikedjennings.com.
You all should, by now, have received confirmation from NUI Galway of your eligibility to vote. If you have not or if you have any problems or queries you should immediately contact them at [email protected].
We will have the election results on Tuesday at 5ish and I will let you know straight away what the outcome is.
Finally, may I say very genuinely that these past weeks have been amongst the most affirming of my entire life. I know that I have a tendency to be long-winded but there is no way that I could ever capture and express what it has meant to me to be contacted by so many friends, old and new, with messages of support. Your words of encouragement, support, friendship and praise have done more for me than you can ever know. I am really and truly grateful to every one of you.
Please stay safe.

Hi,
I have been receiving a steady stream of queries and concerns from graduates who are anxious to vote in the Governing Authority election but who are worried that they are not registered to vote. Most of these people were also conscious of the fact that the University is currently closed for the Christmas period and so they worried about their request to register not being received until after the cut off time of 5pm on New Year's Day.
I was therefore very pleased to be contacted by the Alumni Office (during their own holidays, which I very much appreciate) who have provided the following statement which I hope you will find reassuring:
"In response to queries we have received from some candidates, where graduates are submitting updated email details to the Alumni Office at [email protected] before January 1st at 5pm they will be included in the voter database. The University is currently closed for the Christmas break so graduates will not receive confirmation of this until after the University reopens on January 4th, but their details will be added to the database prior to the election on January 11th and 12th.
Let me reiterate once again, for the avoidance of doubt, that any graduate of NUI Galway/UCG who wishes to update their details on the Alumni database and who contacts the Alumni Office - either by emailing [email protected] or by filling in the online form - before 5pm, on January 1st will have their details updated prior to the election and will be sent an email with a link to vote on January 11th."
So, if you have not already done so please email the Alumni Office now. I would be very hopeful that should any complications arise (for instance, some of you have concerns that the name you go by today is not the name you were known by by the university at the time of your graduation) these will be resolved come the 4th of January.
Kind regards
Mike
Hi All
I hope you have had a lovely Christmas and that you are still relaxing in the run up to New Year's day.
Remember that you will be denied the right to vote in the NUI Galway election in January if you are not registered with the Alumni office.
To be sure of your vote send an email to [email protected]. Simply state your full name (as you were called when you graduated), details and year of your degree and your date of birth. YOU MUST DO THIS BEFORE 5pm ON NEW YEAR'S DAY.
Stay safe ,
Mike

Many thanks to all of you who have contacted me in the past week to offer support in the NUI Galway GA Election
Every day I am reaching more voters and, thankfully, receiving more pledges of support. So, things are going well.
However, there is absolutely no room for complacency!
There are 18 very worthy candidates for just four seats.
It is a welcome development for all of us who believe in gender equality that at least one of those elected must be a woman.
This means that there will, realistically and taking account of the high calibre of the declared women candidates, somewhere between one and a total max of three seats available to me.
I believe a more realistic estimate (and a fairer one, let's be honest) is that there will be two women and two men elected. I'd be delighted with such a result. (I'd be ecstatic if I am one of the men elected.)
So, can I ask you to keep on working hard for me.
For instance, could you spread the word on any social media platforms you have access to?
Mike
Warning!!!
NUI Galway sent out the details of all the candidates last week.
If you did not get this email, there is a danger that you are not registered with them and YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO VOTE!
As an insurance against this eventuality I strongly recommend that you immediately email [email protected].
Once again I want to thank you all, your support has been overwhelming!
Stay safe.
Mike
I
Two more items of good news;
1:The SIPTU Branch which represents Local Authority ENGINEERS and Professional Staff (many being Galway Graduates) has agreed to circulate all members with a letter in support of my candidacy.
2: NUI Galway has confirmed that the election count will be conducted using PR (Single Transferable Vote) system.
