ONE SHOT IRELAND – SPECIAL GUEST ANNOUNCEMENT 1. (More to follow).

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome as a Guest Speaker & Q&A participant for our upcoming ONE SHOT IRELAND June workshops.

Joe McGucken has emerged as one of Ireland’s most original and exciting creative voices, making the leap from viral online comedy sketches to acclaimed work across television, film, live performance & podcasting.

Many audiences will know Joe from the hugely successful RTÉ comedy sketch series Darren & Joe’s Free Gaff, which he co-created and starred in alongside Darren Conway. He first gained major attention through viral content with The Windup Merchantz, building a loyal online following through his unique humour, authentic Dublin storytelling and sharp social commentary. Most recently he also toured in America in Waiting for Godot playing Didi.

Joe has continued to expand into dramatic storytelling and filmmaking. His critically acclaimed short film Hometime, which he wrote and produced, earned Best International Short at the Oxford International Film Festival. Set in 1990s working-class Dublin, the project showcased a completely different side to his creative voice and established him as a serious emerging writer and producer.

Joe also appeared in the RTÉ Kids drama The Unreal, which received IFTA consideration, and recently starred in Emergency Accommodation, which premiered at the Dublin International Film Festival.

Joe has become one of Ireland’s biggest live podcast and comedy draws. Through the award-nominated Stall It with Darren & Joe podcast, he has sold out Dublin’s Vicar st twice in recent years, a massive achievement that highlights the incredible connection he has built with audiences.

He is also the creator and host of the independent podcast BOLD with Joe McGucken, where he explores deep-dive storytelling, unusual perspectives and conversations with fascinating guests. JOE is a doer.

Joe currently has several written projects in development, including a television series in development with RTÉ. Joe is multi-platform storyteller within the Irish entertainment industry. Someone who makes things happen.

Actor / Performer and Crew Passes Now Available

We’re delighted to introduce Actor/Performer Passes and Crew Passes for the filming stage of the One Shot Ireland project at Clermont Screen Hub.

These passes are designed for people who want to step directly into the practical side of filmmaking and experience what a real professional set feels like.

Pass holders will be invited to join us on filming days and take part in the production process alongside directors, actors, cinematographers and the wider creative team. This is an opportunity to observe, assist and contribute while gaining first-hand insight into how a professional production operates.

For actors and performers, it’s a chance to experience the rhythm of a working set, support other filmmakers’ projects, and deepen your understanding of how performance fits into the wider filmmaking process.

Crew pass holders will have the opportunity to assist across various departments, supporting the smooth running of the shoot while building valuable on-set experience and practical knowledge. This is particularly beneficial for emerging DOPs, camera operators, sound recordists, and hair & makeup artists looking to gain real-world set experience, as well as actors who want to better understand production environments.

Please note: These passes are not for participants looking to actively create or develop their own project within One Shot Ireland. Instead, they are designed for those who wish to assist the core group of artists in the production and delivery of their work. This pass does not include access to workshops, talks, or any mentoring elements connected to the development of the One Shot Ireland projects.

The aim is simple: to give people a real, practical understanding of how professional film sets operate, while supporting a collaborative environment where everyone contributes to the successful delivery of the work.

If you’ve ever wanted to see how a film set really functions, gain hands-on experience, and become part of the One Shot Ireland production team, these passes are your chance to get involved.

You can find the Actor/Performer and Crew passes now at:

If you’ve ever watched something and thought, I can do better than that… or felt a quiet frustration that the work you’re putting out there doesn’t truly represent what you’re capable of, then maybe it’s time to do something about it.

That feeling is where a lot of great work begins.

At One Shot Ireland, we created this programme for actors, writers, and emerging filmmakers who want to stop waiting for opportunities and start creating them. If you’re not happy with the material you’re getting, the scenes you’re filming, or the way your talent is being represented on screen, then the answer isn’t to wait around. It’s to take control and make something better. With us.

Over the course of the programme, you’ll develop, shoot, and leave with a high-quality cinematic scene you can actually be proud of. Not something rushed or thrown together, but a piece of work crafted with professional guidance, strong storytelling, and a real focus on performance.

It’s practical. It’s collaborative. And it’s built around the idea that the best way to learn filmmaking is by actually making something.

So if you’ve ever said to yourself, I could do better than that, this is your moment.

Stop waiting.
Start creating.

Do not wait for permission.
Be so good they can't Ignore you.

Going way back in this clip, Mark O’Connor has always had an instinct for raw talent. Over the years he’s worked with and helped discover some incredible Irish and international performers.

Always authentic, always brave and unique.
In the first of some retrospective clips we'll be sharing of Mark's Journey.

In this making of clip from his first feature Between the Canals, you can spot a very raw Peter Coonan, Stephen Jones and Damien Dempsey on set. It’s a reminder of where journeys begin and how some of Ireland’s most recognisable talent started out. Between the Canals remains one of Ireland’s truly independent films, built on passion, belief and the determination to simply get it made.

That spirit of making is what One Shot Ireland is all about.
Getting up and going. Making it happen for yourself.
Discovering opportunity. Growing your craft. Collaborating with others who share the same drive and taking your SHOT!

Join us this June and take the first step in your own story. Personal and cinematic.

WE WANT TO BE A FOREFRONT OF SUPPORTING THE NEXT GENERATION OF MAKERS, DO'ERS AND AUTHENTIC STORYTELLERS.

Here's a few words from a while ago when Mark was interviewed by Joe.

You never know who might show up as a guest speaker on the course this June.
