Hallo everybody!

The RCSI GenSoc wishes you well in this strange time. Under normal circumstances, we would, of course, be hosting our Annual General Meeting *in person* with lots of treats and laughs. The treats & laughs part hasn't changed - but the in-person part maayyyy be a bit tricker. As such, we have decided to do a virtual AGM via Zoom on 29th April 2020! We will update you on the login details for that so you can all be part of it, but in the meantime - if you are interested in becoming part of the 2020/2021 RCSI GenSoc Committee (woop WOOP!), please find the link below to a Google form. Anyone who is interested in running for a committee position can fill it out - and if you have any questions about the roles, please feel free to message our page or email us on [email protected].

At the virtual AGM, if more than one person applies for a position there will be an opportunity for you to fight your corner and tell us why you think you'd be suitable for that role; and a vote will decide who gets what positions. The Application deadline is Monday April 27th April at midnight to give us time to get organised ahead of the e-AGM.

These are strange times, but on behalf of the RCSI Genetics Society Committee of 2019/2020 - thank you all for supporting our events throughout the year and all the fun!

Case of the week time (or I guess case of the month! soz guys) Ok....nice and easy =)

A two year old boy has recently moved to Ireland from Nigeria with his parents - he presents to the emergency department with a two day history of fatigue, breathlessness, swollen fingers and apparent pain.
On examination he is visibly distressed and cries out when the doctor attempts to get him to sit up to examine his chest.
His mum states that apart from a recent mild fever he has been generally well.
His FBC showed Haemoglobin level of 8g/dl and subsequent blood film was taken (see below);
What condition does this child most likely have and what gene is it caused by
Bonus question – why does this condition not often present until 6-12 months of age??

**UPCOMING EVENT*** It was once said; "Life will not be contained. Life breaks free. It expands to new territories, crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously". RCSI Genetics Society wants to bring you on that journey through life - in the form of JURASSIC PARK! We will be screening the movie (along with free popcorn & pizza - what more could one want!) - in the Amphitheatre at the back of 1784 Restaurant, followed by a short conversation based loosely on Richard Attenborough's quote; “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”! Come one, come all! ... and WELCOME... TO JURASSIC PARK!
