Happy Saturday Everybody!

Another great week of fencing at Noble Science Academy Dublin! We've been very busy with tournament prep, getting back into a rhythm with Sabre, welcoming new members and putting in hard work as usual!

We're exploring the use of hanging parries with Sabre as a counter to horizontal or rising cuts, using our opponents force against them by stopping their cut, keeping ourselves safe firstly and the coming around with a moulinet, striking them and transitioning back into a defencive guard!

We took a look at Nachreisen for our Longsword lessons, using our footwork to allow our opponents cuts to pass by before quickly re-entering measure, striking our opponent and coving their sword to prevent an afterblow.

If youd like to join us, or just drop inti a class to try HEMA get in touch with us by DM, or via the email address in our bio!

Sabre has made its return to the academy!

After a brief hiatus, we blew the dust off our sabres and had a crack at it again after several weeks studying dagger duringour Tuesday classes in its place. We took the chance to refamiliarise ourselves with our 6 cuts and their parries to get back into the swing of things so keep an eye on the page to see what we get up over the next few weeks with Sabre!

Tournament season is still upon us and we have a number national tournaments and events coming up very soon, so we're full steam practising our fundamentals starting with parry reposte, and getting comfortable parrying from uncommon guards and positions.

We've had a few new members joining us lately and alot of interest from prospective ones looking to join up, so now is the perfect time to get involved and learn alongside a group of beginners. Send us a message here or via the email in our bio and learn more on how to take part!

We're just about to bid farewell to March, just one class left this month and it'll be our in-house tournament, this time, Longsword!

With the end of the month in sight we've been wrapping up with our work on Abszeten and moving forward with our work on Fiores dagger and abrazare.

Continuing with our absetzen against a cut, we geared up and put our technique to the test againt fully committed strikes, relying on point control and structure to stop the percussive force of a fendente and keep ourselves covered with simultaneously landing our thrust in opposition!
Dagger has been a great addition to the academy, and has been met with lots of enthusiasm which is fantastic to see, we're very proud to have the ability to teach several weapons over multiple systems to our students and dagger is one rarely seen in a clubs curriculum! We're moving on to more technical lessons now, expanding on Fiores dagger system and the almost endless options on how to deal with our opponent, this time however we took the route of closing distance, entering a clinch and throwing them to the ground (safely of course)

St. Patrick's day meant we only had one training session this week which was unfortunate but we still made the most of this short week!

We've been moving forward with Abszeten, this time using it to counter a descending cut, really emphasising the importance of timing and structure in order to find our target, interrupt that cut at the right time and use our posture to keep us safe! We'll be looking at Abszeten more in the coming weeks before we move on to more single time counters in the form of Liechtenauers master cuts!

No dagger this week which was sorely missed, but we'll be back on Tuesday to continue through Fiores dagger vs unarmed and Abrazare!

Rapier took a bit of an interesting turn when we introduced Fabris to our students! This was a big change from our usual classes where we have been pulling from Giganti and Capo Ferro, but the unique posture and mechanics of Fabris was meant with a lot of interest! We'll be working more from Fabris and familiarising ourselves with his system over the next month or two!

If youd like to get involved in HEMA and learn more about Historical Fencing please get in touch either via the email in our bio or by DM! We're always excepting new members and would love to have you by for a class!

What a week!

We've been very busy here, the past week has been jammed with some great classes and fantastic work from our students! ⚔️

We finished up our lessons on Sprechfenster, covering Zu Fechten, Kreig and Abzug in detail, working through all stages of the fight, finally wrapping things up with more of our Abzug drill, making sure we can act effectively in Kreig and disengage safely once scoring a point on our opponent!
On Tuesday we started looking at Abszeten, by countering a thrust with a single time action, offsetting our opponents thrust while delivering our own!

We made more progress through Fiores dagger vs unarmed, looking at the Reverso and sottani along with their counters! Its been so much fun covering dagger in detail that we plan to extend our time with the system and really get stuck into Fiores dagger and abrazare system over the next few weeks!

In our Friday Rapier classes, we're nearing the end of our work on cuts and how to avoid, counter and parry them, taking a final look at cuts to the leg and how Cappo Ferro recommends dealing with them!

We've had several new members joining us the past few weeks, and more interest in people wanting to get involved, so now is the perfect time to join in and learn HEMA! Send us a message here on our socials or at [email protected] to learn how to get involved ⚔️

After several weeks of working on Sprechfenster before moving onto Parry/Reposte we have reached the final boss... Abzug!

Being able to understand and control the Kreig is one thing, but scoring a point and successfully leaving, avoiding an afterblow or a chasing opponent is a whole other thing! Last class we worked on this, starting off in a bind and hitting our opponent while defending ourselves before retreating to a safe distance and covering our retreat!

We're continuing through Fiores Dagger vs Unarmed too, moving onto the Fendente and its counters, which allowed us to get nice and close with some grapples and wrestling!

After covering how and when to cut with our Rapiers, we naturally moved onto defending them, baiting our opponent into throwing a Stramazonne and then shooting our point forward, stopping the cut using timing and structure!

Look like fun, thinking of getting stuck in and learning HEMA? Send us a message here on our socials or get in touch via the email address in our bio and get involved! ⚔️

Mixing things up a little bit this week!

We've been revisiting Fiores dagger vs unarmed, It's been several months since we've last picked up our rondels and got up close and personal, and with a group of students who are learning the system for the first time it's been alot of fun! On Tuesday we covered Fiores 1st Master, which is a great introduction to dagger and it's mechanics. We've got a few more plays to cover so the next few weeks are going to be very interesting 🗡

Longsword is business as usual, working on Parry/Reposte, making sure we can keep ourselves alive before reposting safety and effectively! We changed things up a little bit during our last class, allowing the attacker to retreat, adding a little more speed and shortening the reaction time to our repotes for a more natural scenario!

We've been covering cuts in Rapier, the the preferred way of attacking with this particular weapon but worth covering all the same, after a short lesson that went over when and how to cut with proper technique we'll spend the next few classes getting into the real lessons and learn how to counter cuts!

As always, if you'd like to get involved with classes you can reach out either through our social media or by the email in our bio! ⚔️

Happy Saturday Everyone!

It's been another busy week for us, we've been continuing our work on sprechtfenster, this time focusing on Duplieren. A technique that takes some work to understand and execute correctly but a very useful and important one none the less! Finding that middle groud in a bind, where your opponent is giving neither enough pressure to pull off and attack, or as little pressure where we can shoot down the centre line is tough, but being able to read the bind, act accordingly and dominate the fight is something we pride ourselves on here at Noble Science!

Keeping with what we're good at, we've been focusing on our distance and timing in our Sabre classes, finding our measure and being comfortable with launching a committed attack and keeping ourselves safe using footwork and quick reactions!

We keep with a similar theme as Longsword with our Rapier lessons, continuing to use feints to force a reaction and get hard pressure from our opponent which we can exploit, either by disengaging and attacking their exposed side or by closing the distance, attacking behind their sword and controlling their sword arm!

If youd like to get involved with classes and learn more about HEMA and historical combat, drop us a message or get in touch via the email address in our bio ⚔️

Long time no see!

Coming back strong with a special treat... we had our monthly in-house tournament last Friday, and for our first one of the year, and the first time sparring at intensity for many of our students in several weeks it was full of beautiful exchanges, nice technical fencing and energy!

I usually try to keep these tournament highlights to 90 seconds, but this one ended up coming in at over the three minute mark! So enjoy a supercut of Longsword fencing and some HEMA ASMR!

Another great week of lessons done and dusted!

We've been shaking the rust off here, getting back into the swing of things and setting a great pace for the year ahead!

In Longsword we're back studying a Noble Science staple, Sprechfenster! As a school that prides itself on our bind work, we emphasise the importance of this technique and how to read, understand and control the bind! This week we spoke about Fhulen, feeling, and how to react appropriately to varying amounts of pressure your opponent can give us.

For Sabre, we're working on taking advantage of our opponents weak guards and posture, sniping their forearms and elbows whenever theyre exposed using quick footwork and cuts!

Our Rapier class this week focused on fainting to the outside of our opponent, forcing them to parry and expose their inside allowing us to cavazione and land that thrust! This means setting ourselves up by carefully using measure and timing as well as a executing a convincing feint!
