Hi, I'm Mary Bradley, and I’m passionate about helping students overcome exam anxiety and achieve their full academic potential. With years of experience as a secondary school teacher and qualifications in wellbeing, I’ve seen firsthand how stress can impact students’ performance and overall health. That’s why I’ve dedicated my career to supporting students in transforming their approach to exams. I offer transformative workshops, seminars, and tailored coaching packages designed to equip students with the tools they need to manage stress, boost confidence, and excel in their exams. My approach blends practical techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and relaxation exercises to ensure students are well-prepared, focused, and resilient. In collaboration with Dr. Alison McFadden, a child and educational psychologist, I developed the "Exam Empowerment" course—a comprehensive program aimed at helping students master their mindset and unlock their full potential. Whether through personalized coaching or my online course, my mission is to create lasting positive change in the lives of students, extending far beyond the exam room. I also work with schools, colleges, universities, and workplaces to promote overall wellbeing, ensuring that everyone has the tools they need to thrive. September off to a lovely start!
Had the pleasure of speaking with the Care4Carers group in Moville yesterday.

We talked about how hard it can be to switch off even when the opportunity for a break comes up and how we can manage stress on our body and mind with practical realistic tools.

A full-circle moment ☺️
14 years ago, I began my teaching journey with Hibernia and qualified as a post-primary teacher.
And now my journey has brought me full circle, I'm so delighted to return as Module Lead on the MA in Education for the Wellbeing module.
A privilege to come back to the place where it all began!

When we perceive a threat up ahead(ie. Failing the LC) and we don't have the confidence in ourselves to handle that threat, anxiety and fear thrive!

So this thought experiment is not about lowering expectations or saying that they will fail, it's about tapping into their resilience and building up their confidence that even if things don't work out and their worst case scenario transpires - they can handle it- they'll be sad/disappointed angry- but they'll handle it and explore a different path.

Let them problem solve and tease out creative alternatives and solutions so that the potential of failing doesn't seem as terrifying. This really eases the anxiety and boosts their confidence so that study, focus, and exam performance can get back on track.

Be sure to also play around with the best case scenario and most likely case for balance!

They’ve done the study.
The notes are made. The flashcards are highlighted. The hours have gone in.

Now the question becomes: can they perform under pressure?

Because this stage isn’t only about knowledge anymore. It’s also about confidence, focus, nerves, overthinking, bouncing back after a rough exam and keeping their head when it counts.

Guilt has its place, it's an important indicator that we've done something bad, something outside of our moral code or values, something that harmed someone else.

But sometimes guilt is misplaced, especially when it comes to parenting.

Ask yourself:
Have I actually done something wrong here?

Most parents are doing their absolute best to support their young people but it can be difficult when everyone in the house is under pressure.

So your brain went blank.
Here's what actually helps. 👇
(These tips are backed by research)

1 Acknowledge and accept
Acknowledge that you're thinking brain has temporarily gone offline, you haven't forgotten everything, remember you have the tools to access that part of your brain again.

2.Cold Water/Ice
If the situation allows, get out and run your wrists under cold water or use ice from your water bottle. This gives your nervous system a shock and brings up back into the present. Follow this up with some breathing.

3.Breathe first, think second.
Try the 4-7-8 technique: inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8.
It directly signals your nervous system to stand down and brings your thinking brain back online.

4. Ground yourself in the room.
Name 3 things you can see. 2 you can hear. 1 you can feel. Or pick a colour and pick out as many objects in that colour.
This pulls you out of threat mode and back into the present moment.

5. Write it out before you go in.
Research shows that brain-dumping your worries onto paper before an exam or presentation frees up the mental space you need to actually perform.

6. Memory Dump
In an exam situation, write down everything you're scared you'll forget- formulas, equations, quotes- before getting stuck into the questions. This is great for reminding you of everything you know and giving you a confidence boost.

7. Rename the feeling.
Racing heart. Shallow breath. Sweaty palms. That's not panic, that's your body getting ready for meeting the high stakes.
It isn't poor preparation or not working hard enough.
It's a deeply intelligent, if badly timed, biological protection system doing exactly what it was built to do.

These days between finishing school and starting the exams can be challenging for students and parents.

Students are riding the high of finishing school and coming back to earth to study can be a challenge. When they're at home studying on their own it can be difficult for them to muster up the momentum and motivation to get the work done, especially after an exhausting year of school.

Parents are trying to keep students on track for the final stretch but it's hard when you're at work and trying to keep on top of all the other day to day responsibilities, and maybe reliving your own Leaving Cert experience.

So here are a few tips to get you through the in-between days!
