Scaraveen - Scairbhín

As golfers we’re very aware of the weather and lately some are talking about the unseasonably cold spell but we are experiencing the Scaraveen or the rough weather of the cuckoo.

It’s a spell of weather we see every year after a warming period in mid April, the north westerly winds return and we see the broken weather that we have now. Sometimes it lasts for a week or so but can last the whole month of May too.

The Irish myth is that this is nature’s way of getting back at the cuckoo for laying eggs in the nests of other birds.

It looks like this spell will end in the middle of the week so warmer golfing days are ahead.
