Teachers Unanimously Pass Motion for AI Training 👏👏

Fair play to Joe Rayfus for championing this at TUI congress.

But here is the question that needs to be asked: why in 2026 is this still a motion rather than a given?
But the depressing reality is
- student use and misuse of AI already is ubiquitous in homework and “study”
- Current AI Training for teachers remains optional
- Published Dept of Ed guidelines give no clear guidance on how teachers deal with AI in their classrooms
- New Leaving Cert curricula are rolling out with 40% project components that AI can complete
- Teachers are already under pressure to detect AI misuse in that coursework WITHOUT such training

BOTTOM LINE : How can we expect teachers to guide students on ethical and effective AI use when they have not been properly trained themselves?

The motion is welcome. But specialist, structured AI training for teachers should not require a congress vote in April 2026. It should already be well established.

Great to deliver a session last week for Kerry Education and Training Board on using AI to support Universal Design for Learning.

My Key message throughout ...
We can make our teaching and learning wishlist, become our DONE list, but Professional Expertise is paramount.

No AI tool can identify what will work for a specific student. That knowledge lies with the teacher. Understanding the learner, their needs, their context, that’s irreplaceable.

Another great onsite AI CPD today, this time at Edmund Rice Secondary School, Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipp. 💙💛💙

Brilliant engagement from the staff as we worked through how to get the most out of AI ethically and effectively, with the Five Ps at the centre: Professional Expertise, Prompting, Priming, Pre-checking, and Professional Validation.

We explored practical prompting strategies, how to help students understand AI’s limits, and crucially, how to ensure it doesn’t become a crutch.

We also looked at the decline in traditional search skills and how AI overviews are now becoming the standard for how students find information.
