Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow High Temperature Warning for Leinster and Tipperary, valid from 6:00am Wednesday 12 August until 6:00am Friday 14 August.
Temperatures may exceed 27°C, with nighttime temperatures remaining above 15°C. Potential impacts include heat stress, uncomfortable sleeping conditions, increased water-safety risks and animal welfare concerns.
With the warm weather continuing, Order of Malta Ireland – Rathdrum Unit would like to remind everyone to take a few simple precautions:
Stay hydrated – drink water regularly throughout the day and don't wait until you feel thirsty.
Keep cool – avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunshine, particularly during the hottest part of the day. Seek shade where possible and wear lightweight clothing and a hat.
Protect yourself from the sun – use appropriate sunscreen and remember that children can be particularly vulnerable to heat and sun exposure.
Look out for others – check on older people, young children and anyone who may be particularly vulnerable during hot weather.
Remember your pets – ensure animals have plenty of fresh water and access to shade. Never leave a child or animal unattended in a parked vehicle, even for a short period.
Take extra care around water – beaches, rivers and lakes are likely to be busier during the warm weather. Supervise children closely and never take unnecessary risks in or around water.
Know the signs of heat exhaustion: headache, dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, weakness, thirst, cramps or feeling faint.
Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Warning signs can include confusion, altered behaviour, collapse, seizures or a very high body temperature. If you suspect heatstroke, call 112 or 999 immediately, move the person somewhere cool and begin cooling them while awaiting emergency assistance.
Enjoy the sunshine, but please do so safely.
