Some pictures from Coastwatch survey units down between Seaview and Ballyhealy. It was such a breezy day. Three of us walked, talked and noted all the things of interest along this shoreline. There's lots of rock armour going in to protect people's homes but inbetween these areas there's lots of coastal erosion which is alarming to see. 🌊

A little while ago, someone in our community raised a very relevant question with our group: why had the old water pump at Little Beach, so familiar to generations of Kilmore Quay villagers in its green coat, suddenly been painted white?

While the reason for the change is perhaps a question best put to those responsible for the village's upkeep, it certainly sparked our curiosity. How old was the pump? Who had made it? And had it always been green? Kilmore Quay Conservation Group decided to do a little digging into its past. And, as it turns out, this modest little pump has rather more of a story to tell than we first imagined.

I was at the Discover Your Dunes event in Curracloe on Sunday with An Taisce - Clean Coasts. Dunes build with the constant movement of sand and then plants establish, like the marram grasses which hold the sand in place. They are our natural coastal defense, our movement within the dunes causes erosion and fencing curtails us from causing too much sand erosion in certain areas. At the back of the dunes where the sand is more stable lots of different plants and lichens can grow making it a rich area for biodiversity. 🌊 🦋 🌼

Monday 12th October and low tides are early afternoon and getting later each day. 1pm to 4pm.
The Coastwatch survey dates have been pushed out 'til 20th October, so there's still time to explore a part of the shore near you.
Keep these dates in mind 19th and 20th, we can go to the shore in the dark and have a nice evening Seashore Explore, starting at 6pm. 🔦
