October - Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Parents/Guardians,
Our local Health Promotion and Improvement Officer, Keith Ryan has asked us to forward on this information regarding Breast Cancer Awareness Month:
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and attached is a great resource on all aspects of breast cancer prevention, being breast aware, early diagnosis and BreastCheck screening for your own use and for circulation within in your networks.
Key messages:
Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women in Ireland
Approx 4,036 women in Ireland diagnosed each year and on average 30 men
1 in 7 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime
Most common in women age 50+ but can occur at any age
Being breast aware starting from teenage years onwards and knowing what to look out for are key to early detection and diagnosis
Registering and attending for your BreastCheck screening when you reach the age of 50
Be aware of the modifiable risk factors of breast cancer such as maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, quitting smoking, limiting your alcohol intake, and breastfeeding when applicable can significantly reduce your risk of breast cancer
Thank you,
Keith Ryan
