Unfurling Beech leaves are Spring’s poetry…

The Beech Tree

The process begins
with planting,
always with planting,
then tending
and harvesting—
nothing neglected,
everything perfected
in its time.

The work is slow and tedious;
the work requires patience—

like the building
of a leaf
first with vernation—
leaves folded
packed tightly
intricately engineered
inside a tiny bud.

Then at the first hint
of summery sun,
the magical unfurling
of beech leaves
baptizing the garden
in spring green.

Finally plucking
the tender leaves—
sweet-sour taste
hitting the tongue—
a portent of spring.

The beech tree announces
the end of Blackberry winter
and it all began
with planting a seed.

Photinia
Common name: Red Robin

Photinias are ornamental shrubs or trees with small white flowers, red berries and often colourful leaves in spring/summer or autumn. The best known is evergreen Photinia × fraseri ‘Red Robin’, which has striking red young foliage and is widely grown as a specimen shrub or hedge.

Red Robin’s superpower is vibrant red young foliage and clusters of small white flowers, followed by red berries. A stunning hedge - watch out for mature hedges on your travels as it is a very popular choice.

'Red Sentinel' is a medium-sized deciduous crab apple tree with single white flowers 3cm in width, followed by clusters of cherry-like, glossy, deep red fruits 2.5cm in width, which persist well into winter

Spring is making way for summer and we’re all getting energised and enthused again after a very wet run since last July!

Prunus Tai Haku
Ornamental cherry, perhaps the finest japanese flowering cherry of all.
Medium sized tree maturing to a classic broad spreading crown. Beautful pure white single flowers with autumn yellows at fall, Height 4-8m and spread 9-10m
