On making a real connection to the children with Gordon Woolard

We'll do practical activities on certain aspects of Rudolf Steiner's 10th lecture of Foundations of Human Experience / Study of Man, GA 293.
This lecture course of the summer 1919 for the teachers-to-be at the first Waldorf school was, I would say, a task to turn inside out.
In the 10th lecture Rudolf Steiner led the teachers through the metamorphosis of the bones of the human skull into the bones of the limbs.
The reason, he said, is to overcome the need for so many words when communicating with the children, by replacing this need with an 'underground path'. This path is the 'real connection' with the children which ( on his first visit after the school had opened ) he was concerned to find at work there, in action.

The lecture can be found at . and I've made a précis of it at
We'll explore turning inside out through movement, drawing, mental pictures and imaginative digestion.

About Gordon
I've been a vegetable grower, beekeeper, woodworker. As stargazer, I've always been occupied with arithmetic and geometry. Having taught physics and mathematics in Waldorf schools, also kindergartener for a time, I now help children with their learning differences, through the development of the senses. This includes doing mathematics for all ages, sometimes through feet and hands. In these tasks I train teachers, mostly overseas, both in-person and online and give workshops for all on Rudolf Steiner's Philosophy of Spiritual Activity, projective geometry, the forms of plants.

Niamh started her working life as a General /Sick Children’s Nurse. Working in the operating theatre and
as a Clinical Teacher in Crumlin Children’s Hospital Dublin. She then trained as a Midwife. Her children
drew her to Steiner education and she trained as a Kindergarten Teacher in the early 2000’s. She worked
for 12 years as a Kindergarten Assistant in Raheenwood S.N.S. County Clare. Her involvement in the
current Kindergarten Teacher Training program introduced her to Blomberg Rhythmic Movement Training
(BRMT). This work unites her combined interest in education and health. She currently works one-to-one
with children and adults using BRMT to enhance children’s learning experience and to help people take
hold of their physical body in a more complete way.

We are excited to welcome Martyn Rawson as one of our keynote speakers at the Steiner Waldorf Education Conference - The Upward Spiral, happening 3rd October. Martyn will also host a workshop on the day looking at The Waldorf Curriculum - A new expression. He is an editor of 'The Yellow Book' (The Tasks and Content of the Steiner-Waldorf Curriculum), which has been the primary curriculum resource for Waldorf teachers since the 90s. Now he and European colleagues are engaged in a fresh expression of our unique pedagogy, but one which also embeds our practices in a wider educational landscape. In this workshop Martyn will lay out the key elements of A Common Core Curricular Framework, and invite participants to engage in the process of bringing this important initiative to fruition.

Language is one of our most powerful gifts, and the way we use it, especially around children, has a lasting impact. Through everyday conversations, stories, comments, and even seemingly insignificant phrases, adults shape how children see themselves and understand the world. Children listen carefully, absorb our words, and build their self-image from the messages they hear, whether positive or negative.

As children learn to speak, they are also learning how language is used: the tone, the attitudes behind words, and whether our actions match what we say. Casual remarks, repeated criticisms, or impatient responses can leave deep impressions, while thoughtful, encouraging language can nurture confidence and belonging.

Listening is just as important as speaking. When children feel truly heard, accepted, and respected, they are more likely to share their thoughts and feelings openly. Our verbal and non-verbal communication, our tone, body language, and authenticity, together model how meaningful communication works.

Ultimately, this reflection reminds us to be mindful of the powerful influence of language. Words are never neutral: they can harm, but they can also heal, support growth, and strengthen a child’s sense of self
