We recently read a reflection titled “Stop Entertaining Your Babies” by Althea Cutting, and it stopped us in our tracks.

It brought us straight back to our own childhood —
slow Saturdays with our mam baking,
family board games where laughter mattered more than rules,
playing outside until we were called in for food,
walking barefoot in the rain,
long stretches of time where nothing much happened… and everything did.

We didn’t call it anything back then.
It was just childhood.

Reading it also made us reflect deeply on how we practice in our creche, and on the shared values that guide our work with children — seeing them not as beings to be constantly entertained, but as capable, curious humans who deserve calm, trust, and time.

In a world that is loud, rushed, and endlessly demanding attention, it can feel as though we must fill every moment for children — with toys, activities, noise, enrichment, explanation.

But children don’t need more volume.
They need refuge.

What resonated so strongly for us was the reminder that when we do less, children do more.
When we slow down, they show us who they are.

We see this every day — in the child who stirs dough beside an adult, folds a cloth with care, watches rain on the window, or simply sits and observes.
Not bored in the way adults fear — but absorbed, regulating, becoming.

This is the childhood we were given.
And it is the childhood we feel a deep responsibility to protect for the children in our care.

The world will keep screaming.
But within our homes, and within our creche, we can choose calm.
We can choose presence over performance.
We can trust that real life — imperfect, slow, and human — is enough.

✨ January at Mini Me’s ✨

January is a gentle month with us — a time for reconnecting, settling back into familiar routines, and finding our rhythm again after the festive break.

Our days are filled with calm moments, meaningful interactions, child-led play, and plenty of time both indoors and outdoors.

We focus on supporting emotional wellbeing, rebuilding friendships, and creating a sense of security as each child eases back into their days with us.

We look forward to a peaceful, positive start to the year with our children and families 💛

🎃 Did you know Halloween started in Ireland? 👻

Over 2,000 years ago, the Celts celebrated Samhain, marking the end of harvest and the start of winter. They believed spirits roamed the earth, so they lit bonfires and wore costumes to stay safe.

Kids went door-to-door for food or coins in a tradition called “souling”—our ancestor of modern trick-or-treat!

Jack-o’-lanterns were carved from turnips, inspired by the story of Stingy Jack. Pumpkins came later in America.

Fun foods included barmbrack (fruit bread with hidden charms) and colcannon (mashed potatoes with cabbage).

✨ Ireland is the birthplace of Halloween—so light a candle, carve a lantern, and celebrate like a Celt!

🌱 From one potato to twenty! 🥔✨

Back in May, one of our Cinn Óga children brought in a potato with little roots (eye shoots) and asked if we could plant it in the garden planters.

Today, the children decided it was time to dig it up… and to their delight, they found about 20 potatoes hiding in the soil!

The excitement was incredible – from digging and counting, and proudly showing their harvest. 🪣🥔

This is what Cinn Óga is all about:
🌿 Following children’s ideas
🌿 Hands-on learning and discovery
🌿 Joy in simple, everyday magic

Next up… we are already talking about planting turnip seeds – we can’t wait to see them grow 💚✨

👉 Does this sound like the kind of afterschool your child would love? Join us at Cinn Óga – where children’s ideas grow into real adventures.
