Safety Boat Course Success 🚤

A huge well done to our 6 participants who recently completed their Safety Boat Course with Atlantic Marine Training! 👏

It was fantastic to welcome participants from a number of Irish Sailing clubs and Sea Scouting - Ireland groups, with plenty of practical, water-based training throughout the course.

The group worked across multiple boats and a variety of water-based craft, giving everyone valuable experience managing different scenarios and working safely around other vessels and activities on the water.

The course was delivered with a Senior Instructor Safety Boat qualified instructor in attendance, alongside our Centre Principal, who is also a Senior Instructor, both providing a strong level of experience and support throughout the training.

A special thank you to Karl Glynn from AtlanticPowerboating.ie for supporting us on this course. Your assistance was greatly appreciated and helped make the course a great success. 🤝

To all 6 participants — well done on your hard work and commitment, and we wish you all the very best as you put your new skills into practice with your clubs and organisations.

This week, the Atlantic Marine Training team delivered another bespoke own boat tuition session, designed entirely around our customer’s individual requests and training goals.

Rather than following a fixed course syllabus, we worked through the areas the skipper wanted to develop most, providing practical, hands-on coaching aboard their own vessel. Training on your own boat allows you to build confidence with the controls, equipment, electronics, and handling characteristics of the boat you’ll actually be using on the water.

Whether it’s close-quarters manoeuvring, berthing, passage planning, navigation, boat handling in challenging conditions, safety procedures, or simply becoming more confident at the helm, our bespoke tuition is tailored to your experience and objectives.

The result? Training that’s relevant, practical, and immediately applicable every time you head afloat.

This week the Atlantic Marine Training team had the pleasure of delivering an Introduction to Powerboating Course for a family at their holiday home, using their own boat in the environment where they’ll be boating most.

Training on your own vessel is a fantastic way to build confidence, develop practical skills, and become familiar with your boat’s handling, safety equipment, and day-to-day operation. It was great to see everyone progressing throughout the course and enjoying their time afloat.

A big thank you to the family for choosing Atlantic Marine Training. We wish you many safe and enjoyable adventures on the water.

While the team are out of the country, we’re looking back at a recent Direct Assessment completed before they flew out.

Our candidate was a young skipper with incredible experience and generations of maritime knowledge behind him. We reckon he probably learned to fish before he learned to walk!

Following a round-table discussion covering the COLREGs, navigation, and other key elements of the Irish Sailing National Powerboat Certificate, it was time to head afloat.

The conditions were lively, providing the perfect opportunity for him to showcase excellent helming skills, sound decision-making, and impressive local knowledge.

The evening concluded at anchor, where our Senior Instructor—highly impressed with the on-water assessment—recapped the Irish Sailing standards and expectations that accompany this certificate, reinforcing the key points, best practices, and common pitfalls to avoid.

A huge congratulations! 👏🏻

We don’t often conduct Direct Assessments, as they involve no instructor coaching or tuition—the candidate must demonstrate that they already meet the required standard. To make it even more challenging, this assessment took place at the Irish Sailing Training Centre of the Year.

Recently, in conjunction with Irish Sailing and Slaney Search & Rescue, our team on the diving side of the house was back delivering Continued Professional Development (CPD) for commercial diving operations.

Drawing on decades of real-world Search & Rescue experience, combined with decades of commercial and operational diving expertise, our instructors delivered scenario-based training designed to challenge participants, reinforce best practice, and maintain the highest professional standards.

For decades, they have provided an essential voluntary Search & Rescue service to their local community. What many people don’t realise is that organisations like this generate their own funding, not only to keep their rescue assets operational but also to invest in ongoing professional training. Recently, the team at Atlantic Marine Training had the pleasure of delivering advanced commercial vessel training to the crew of Dublin Bay Sea Safaris, an exciting new sightseeing operator bringing adventure to both Dublin and Wicklow’s stunning coastlines. 🚤🇮🇪

The training programme consisted of two daytime passages designed to support the company’s operations in planning, implementing and continuously monitoring safe operating margins during their action-packed coastal tours.

🌙 We also completed a night passage to support the requirements of the Marine Survey Office (MSO) commercial skipper licensing pathway, ensuring crews are prepared to operate safely and confidently in challenging conditions.

Throughout the programme we worked extensively on:

🔹 Advanced helming techniques
🔹 Datum searches
🔹 Area searches
🔹 Emergency response scenarios afloat
🔹 Lee shore recoveries
🔹 Slow-speed transfers and close-quarter boat handling
🔹 decision making and risk management

🌊⚓ Another fantastic weekend on the water at Atlantic Marine Training! ⚓🌊

Recently we welcomed 3 more participants aboard for their National Powerboat Certification 🚤👏

Although we worked through what can only be described as an authentic Irish summer ☔😂 (where the rain is just a little warmer than usual), there were still plenty of smiles aboard as everyone got stuck into the syllabus and developed their boating skills. 🌦️🚤😎

Two of our participants were completing their National Powerboat Course as part of obtaining their ICC (International Certificate of Competence) 🌍📜, allowing them to take their adventures further afield and enjoy boating holidays in the sunshine and tropics. 🌴☀️🍹

We’ve also recently seen participants obtaining their VHF SRC Radio Certificate 📡📻 to meet charter requirements for boating holidays in beautiful Croatia 🇭🇷⛵.

It’s a great reminder that if you’re planning the ultimate boating holiday, now is the time to look ahead and see what training and certifications you’ll need before you travel. 🌍🗺️🚤
