One of the best ways to build your performance skills is by using backing tracks. They’re not just there to make things sound fuller, they’re a brilliant training tool. Playing along to a track helps you develop timing, listening, and that all-important ability to keep going, no matter what happens.

Because and this is the key: playing isn’t about stopping every time something goes wrong. It’s about staying in the music. If you miss a note or lose your place, the goal is to jump back in, not rewind and start again. Backing tracks are perfect for this because they keep moving, just like pro musicians would.

It’s also helpful to mix things up. Practicing with a click track or metronome builds solid timing, but playing without one is just as important. It teaches you to listen, feel the pulse, and respond musically, more like you would in a real ensemble or with an orchestra. That balance between structure and freedom is where the magic happens.

And here’s a lovely thought to hold onto: you don’t need to play everything perfectly to contribute. Even if you’re only playing an accompaniment, you are part of the sound.
So enjoy it and listen and feel the music. Let the continuity draw you in and keep you going!
