Pictured are some of the Clinical Veterinary Nursing teaching team, Olivia Cregg, Aisling Flynn and Gina Burke, visiting the to see Team based learning in action, which is the primary vehicle for education on the Medicine programme in the university. They were joined by colleagues from the veterinary programme, establishing connections and opportunity for future interprofessional collaboration. Huge thanks to both the Department of Bioveterinary and Microbial Science and for funding the trip.

To wrap up Microbial Genetics lectures, our Year 2 BSc Microbiology students surprised their lecturer John Flannery in the best way—turning up in matching T-shirts and a bringing a brilliant atmosphere to the final session!

Making Bacteria Glow ✨
Today, our 2nd-year Microbiology students got hands-on experience in tuning gene expression in E. coli 🧫.
We cloned the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) gene, originally from jellyfish, into a bacterial plasmid. By adding the correct sugar to the growth medium, students were able to control protein production and watch the bacteria “light up”! 🌱💡
This experiment links directly to real-world biotechnology, like the production of insulin in bacteria, which uses similar gene expression techniques.

Welcoming Our French Students!

We had the pleasure of hosting two lovely students from Université Clermont Auvergne, Alice Barbier and Pauline Gomez, for a placement over the past few weeks. They worked under Paulina Flannerys supervision, along with Cormac, Iain, and John at the Department of Bioveterinary and Microbial Sciences, TUS Athlone.
They impressed us all with their curiosity, eagerness to learn, and enthusiastic involvement. They even helped us with SciFest and visited a local school to talk about science — a great example of their motivation and outreach spirit.
Many thanks to Cormac for making it possible for both students to join us.
It is truly refreshing to work with such smart, ambitious young people. We would highly recommend them to anyone.
We wish them all the very best in their future careers!
