Pukaro Naam Baba Ka Pukaro

Ilahi Sufi Qawwali presents a brief manqabat praising Baba Farid Shakar Ganj رَحْمَةُ اللَّٰهِ عَلَيْه One of the earliest Sufi saints in the subcontinent, his profound Punjabi poetry comforted people in times of turmoil and taught that love for humanity is the path to love of God. His message is universal; his khanqah welcomed everyone, regardless of religion or caste.

Sufi masters like Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and Baba Farid taught that divine love and justice belong to all. Their shrines across South Asia became open spaces where people of every caste and religion come together to sing and share. Sufism unites rather than divides, insisting on compassion, inclusion and spiritual freedom.

As a women‑led ensemble, Ilahi Sufi Qawwali trains at the Sama School of Music under Tahir Qawwal. Our purpose is to honour our teachers and carry this tradition with sincerity. In a world where Islam is often distorted by politics and division, we remember the saints who spread this path through love, music and devotion.

Unke Andaz‑e‑Karam is a beautiful Qawwali naat that honours the mercy, kindness and divine grace of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This short excerpt from our practice sessions at Sama School of Music captures a powerful moment where the women of Ilahi Sufi Qawwali explore the mood of the piece with deep focus. As the first female qawwali ensemble, Ilahi is still early in its journey; our emphasis remains on daily riyaaz and faithfully learning the tradition rather than performing publicly.

This clip features a burst of gamak taan – an improvisational technique where each note within the raag is given extra force. Such virtuosity taans, inherited from Hindustani classical music, add intensity and colour to the qawwali’s devotional expression.

Excerpt from our 2025 rendition of Haq Ali Ali live in Berlin.
A brief flight into Raag Gunkali, alap and tans, deep, mystical, and uncompromising in its mood.

In the Qawwali tradition we learned from our Ustads, we sometimes use murchana, touching nearby ragas and temporarily shifting the Sa to reveal new shades of feeling, without leaving the spirit of the piece.

Alap in Raag Jaunpuri 🌹

Based on our recent quiz and exploration of Jaunpuri, I tried to demonstrate the Raag in the Patiala Gharana style of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan; bridging dhrupad ang to khayal with a touch of rhythmic pulse, shuddh dha and less emphasis on komal Ga.

Each gharana has a unique way of expressing a raag ✨

Raag Quiz !!
This melodic structure has been used in many great Qawwali kalams, often considered to be in Raag Mishra Kafi as it’s a cool blend of Asavri and Kafi scales.
But to me the structure seems defined enough to be its own Raag 🤔

Practicing together at this ancient church with epic acoustics was such a proud experience !
