Di negara-negara berkembang, limbah makanan terjadi paling sering di tahap awal rantai pangan yang dikarenakan oleh kendala finansial, manajerial, teknis pemanenan, serta fasilitas penyimpanan dan pendinginan. Penguatan rantai pasokan melalui pelatihan ke petani dan investasi dalam infrastruktur, transportasi, serta dalam perluasan industri makanan kemasan dapat membantu mengurangi jumlah makanan yang terbuang.

In developing countries, food waste and losses occur mainly at the early stages of the value chain due to problems in financial, managerial, or technical constraints in harvesting techniques as well as storage and cooling facilities. Strengthening the supply chain through the direct support of farmers and investments in infrastructure, transportation, and the expansion of the food and packaging industry could help to reduce the amount of food loss.

Mungkin tahun ini, perayaan Natal dan Tahun Baru akan terasa berbeda. Untuk sebagian orang, mereka tidak dapat pulang untuk merayakan bersama keluarga besar, juga tidak ada lagi riuh kembang api di malam tahun baru.

Namun, marilah kita tutup tahun ini dengan gembira dan harapan yang baru. Gembira karena hingga saat ini kita masih dapat bertahan di tengah ketidakpastian dan berharap penuh bahwa di tahun yang akan datang akan tiba saatnya pandemi berakhir apabila kita menaati protokol kesehatan, mendengar pendapat para ahli, dan terus berdoa.

Christmas this year might feel very different from what we’re used to due to ongoing global pandemic challenges. For some people, they can’t make it home to celebrate with family. There also won’t be new year’s eve fireworks lighting up the sky.

However, let’s close this year with a happy and hopeful heart. Happy because we can survive until this moment despite the uncertainty, and fully hope that there will be a time where the pandemic will end if we all follow the COVID guidelines, listen to the experts, and keep on praying.

Kehidupan bertani mengajarkan kita akan kesabaran; kamu tidak dapat mempercepat pertumbuhan tanaman atau mengontrol hama yang mengganggu pertumbuhan tanaman. Penemuan teknik bertani merupakan sebuah langkah besar untuk peradaban yang lebih teratur dan aman. Bukan tanah pertanian yang membuat seseorang menjadi petani, melainkan usaha yang dilakukan. Petani tidak hanya bekerja dari subuh hingga matahari terbenam. Mereka bekerja hingga selesai. Untuk mewujudkan pertanian berkelanjutan, petani harus dapat menghasilkan profit dan hidup dengan layak.

Life on a farm is a school of patience; you can't hurry the crops or take control of the pests that destroy your crops. The discovery of agriculture was the first big step towards a more organized and secured civilized life. It is not the agricultural land that makes the farmer but the work he puts into it. Farmers don't just work till the sun goes down. They work until the job is done. To make agriculture sustainable, a grower has to be able to make decent and fair living.

Pada tahun 2050, populasi dunia diperkirakan akan mencapai 9,1 milyar, 34% lebih tinggi dari sekarang. Hampir semua peningkatan populasi akan terjadi di negara-negara berkembang. Urbanisasi akan meningkat tajam dan sekitar 70% populasi dunia akan menjadi masyarakat urban (dibanding saat ini 49%). Tingkat pendapatan akan berlipat ganda. Hal tersebut harus diikuti dengan produksi pangan yang memadai (tanpa bersaing dengan biofuel) hingga 70% kenaikan.

By 2050 the world's population will reach 9.1 billion, 34% higher than today. Nearly all of this population increase will occur in developing countries. Urbanization will continue at an accelerated pace, and about 70% of the world's population will become urban citizens (compared to 49% today). Income levels will be higher than it is now. Thus, with a more urban and prosperous population, our food production (apart from biofuel) should increase by about 70%.

3 CARA UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KEAMANAN PANGAN:

1. Peningkatan produktivitas
Banyak lahan pertanian yang tidak mencapai potensinya. Lahan tersebut hanya menghasilkan 50% lebih sedikit dari apa yang bisa dicapai. Dengan menaikan efisiensi produksi, maka kita dapat mengurangi pembebasan lahan untuk pertanian dan memberi makan 850 juta manusia.

2. Penggunaan pupuk yang efisien
Penggunaan pupuk berbahan dasar nitrogen dan fosfor pada padi dan jagung diperkirakan dapat berkurang hingga 13-29% namun tetap dapat memperoleh hasil yang sama. Produksi dapat menjadi lebih efisien lagi dengan mengatur manajemen waktu, penempatan, dan tipe pupuk.

3. Mengurangi sampah makanan
Secara global, jumlah makanan yang terbuang baik karena persiapan yang inefisien maupun saranan penyimpanan dan distribusi yang buruk mencapai 30-50%. Dengan mengurangi sampah makanan, kita dapat membuat dampak yang signifikan dalam menyediakan sumber pangan.

3 WAYS TO IMPROVE FOOD SECURITY

1. Increase in productivity
Current agricultural land is not reaching its potential, yielding 50% less than what it could produce. Closing the gap between what is being produced and what could be produced would both reduce the need to clear the land for agriculture and feed 850 million people.

2. Efficient fertilizer consumption
It was estimated that the use of fertilizers with nitrogen and phosphorus on rice and corn crops can be reduced by 13-29% and still produce the same yields. Further efficiency can be gained through adjustments in the timing, placement and type of fertilizer.

3. Food waste reduction
Globally, 30-50% of food production goes to waste because of inefficient preparation or inadequate storage facilities and distribution. Reducing this waste can make a significant impact on feeding more people.
