Sebenarnya, tidak ada ciri khas mendasar fosil kayu yang ditemukan di setiap negara, sejauh ini fosil kayu yang ditemukan di Indonesia mengandung mineral silika, sementara warna yang muncul berasal dari unsur pengotornya. Silika yang mengawetkan pohon purba ini berasal dari aktivitas gunung berapi.
Dari jenis pohonnya, umumnya di Indonesia ditemukan jenis fosil kayu yang ditemukan didominasi oleh keluarga Dipterocarpacea yang memiliki buah bersayap, yang jika jatuh dia akan berputar seperti helikopter kecil. Keluarga ini sekarang terdiri dari 695 spesies yang umumnya tumbuh di kawasan tropis rendah. Kalau kamu senang masuk hutan atau gunung tropis di Indonesia, kamu masih bisa menemukan dipterocarp modern lho seperti pohon meranti.
