Build with bamboo and beyond.

Following the April 2026 edition, Bamboo Unboxed Workshop returns to Sumatra in 2027 with new material explorations — including how bamboo can work alongside other natural materials in construction.

Over 6 days, participants move through the full building process, from material preparation to full-scale structures, working directly with the material and learning alongside experienced practitioners in the field.

Set within Orangutan Haven, North Sumatra, Bamboo Unboxed Workshop is the world’s only bamboo workshop that takes place inside an orangutan sanctuary.

Participants may also join the post-workshop adventure through North Sumatra, extending the experience beyond the workshop itself.

OUH Bamboo Building 06 - Shelters (Eco-Trails & Guard House)

The trail shelters and guard structures are elevated on stilts to respond to terrain and rainfall.

They use pinboo board flooring and split & flattened bamboo ceilings, creating lightweight yet durable platforms for rest and monitoring.

These structures extend the sanctuary’s infrastructure into the landscape without heavy ground intervention.

Bamboo adapts to movement, terrain, and daily use.

OUH Bamboo Buildings 05 — Restrooms & Arrival Area

These restroom facilities serve both the arrival area and the orangutan island zones.

The design draws inspiration from waterfall forms. Rainwater collected from the green roof is reused within the sanitation system.

The roof sits on a bamboo split mesh system, distributing load while allowing ventilation and drainage.

Here, bamboo supports hygiene infrastructure with integrated water logic.

OUH Bamboo Buildings 04 — Ticketing Office
The ticketing office marks the arrival point into Orangutan Haven.

Designed with rammed earth walls and floors, the structure incorporates laminated bamboo split beams — used here for the first time on-site — which increase dimensional stability and precision.

This building combines earth construction and engineered bamboo elements within a single envelope.

Durability begins at the entrance.
