Since its establishment in 1964, The Lembaga Demografi - further referred to as LD- has developed into one of the best-known and versatile consulting Institutes. It has currently permanent staff of highly qualified experts consisting of economists, demographers, sociologists, anthropologists, planners, statisticians and other specialists. To adapt with recent demand on population related aspects s
uch as health, gender, reproductive health, ageing and environment, the staff development and expertise on these aspects have been significantly increased. These professionals strive through effective cooperation in order to offer the best solution to a wide-range and detailed population issues. This way, the Institute is able to provide invaluable assistance to the clients. Researchers of the Institute are active in providing consulting assistance to many government departments such as the Ministry of Health, the State Ministry of Population/the National Family Planning Coordinating Board, the Ministry of Cooperatives, the State Ministry of Woman Affairs, the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Manpower, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Transmigration, as well as to the House of Representatives and the Supreme Advisory Council. The Institute has also established informal linkages with the regional population studies centers in Indonesia and has endorsed several population surveys and other activities for mutual needs and benefit. with UNFPA, WHO, ILO, ESCAP, RAND, World Bank, ADB, USAID, FHI, East-West Center, The Futures Group/Policy Project, ANU, IIASA, The Population Council of Vietnam, just to name a few. To keep up with the current development in population issues the Institute has decided not to be absent in international seminars or conferences. This creates formal and informal relationships of the researchers with foreign experts in relevant fields. The Institute likewise has a competitive edge in human resource development. As part of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia, it has become the only Institute which specializes in population and labor economics.
