What is the CranioSacral System? 🌿

The CranioSacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding and protecting the brain and spinal cord.

Practitioners use gentle touch to listen, observe and explore the body in a different way.

Recently, more dentists and orthodontists have been attending CranioSacral Therapy classes than ever before. Here’s the anatomy behind why.

Teeth are part of the whole body system, not an isolated structure of their own. The face is a secondary structure, formed around the neurocranium, which is the primary structure.

Dysfunction, lesions, or distortions in the neurocranium can affect the face bones directly, driving new occlusion problems, cross bites, and teeth disorganization, the very issues dentists are trained to fix.

What’s becoming clear is that fixing them fully means working with the whole body, not just the mouth. Preparing the body for orthodontic correction and resolving the primary dysfunction behind the occlusion makes results easier to reach and far more permanent.

If a client’s neck pain keeps returning no matter what technique you use on the neck, the neck was probably never the real problem.

The craniosacral system runs from the cranium, through the spinal canal, all the way to the sacrum. Tension anywhere along that tube can travel. Traction from the sacrum or the lower dural tube often transmits mechanical tension straight up to the neck, and the neck ends up struggling to compensate.

That shows up as neck pain, migraines, ringing in the ear, or dizziness, none of which start in the neck itself.

The fix starts with evaluating the whole dural tube, its balance and movement, the craniosacral rhythm at the sacrum, the mobility of the sacrum and sacroiliac joints, and the connection between the sacrum and the fifth lumbar vertebra. Release the inferior pull, and the neck finally gets to rest.

Always treat the whole body, not just where the symptom shows up.

Evaluating the craniosacral rhythm is one of the most important assessment tools in CranioSacral Therapy, and it comes down to four specific parameters.

🔸Symmetry. How equally the rhythm shows up on the right and left sides of the body, and how balanced the expansion and retraction, or flexion and extension, phases are.

🔸Quality. How strong, easy, and vital the rhythm feels, and how easily you can palpate it in this particular client.

🔸Amplitude. How far the rhythm travels, essentially how big its motion is.

🔸Rate. How many flexion-extension cycles happen per minute, checked against the typical range, then evaluated against this particular client.
