As you will know this May we are celebrating Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month and applaud all our nurses for the great work and dedication they put into our practice.

Today we would like to introduce you to Paige who is our Deputy to Head Nurse, Qualified Equine Nursing Technician and Pharmacy/Lab Manager.

Paige started as a stable hand at Newnham Court Equine 4 and half years ago and through hard work and dedication, she worked her way up to be Deputy to our Head Nurse, studied and qualified as an Equine Nursing Technician and took on the important role of Pharmacy/Lab manager.

As an equine veterinary nurse, every day you are likely to be involved in a variety of different aspects of horse care, from assisting a veterinary surgeon in theatre to mucking out and feeding horses. Other tasks you may be involved in include:

🐴 Preparing horses for surgery
🐴 Nursing sick and intensive care horses
🐴 Running tests on lab machines
🐴 Attending emergency calls (any time, day or night, weekday or weekend)
🐴 Administering medication under veterinary supervision.

We asked Paige some questions in aid of VN Awareness Month, here is what she had to say.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠?

I love my job! Not only being around different horses and donkeys every day but caring for their needs when they need us and being able to see the end result of them getting to go home and be with their owners again, being happy and healthy again. But it’s not always so easy, we certainly have our days when we can also feel upset and emotionally attached to the horses and donkeys in our care.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧?

Well I certainly have too many to tell, but we will be here all day otherwise, haha! An emergency call to an Impaled fence post through a shire horse on her abdomen, which required about 10 people to keep her settled (with drugs onboard), and trying to keep the wound as sterile as we could to be able to stitch her up and get her safely to the clinic for emergency surgery. I also enjoy seeing pre-season breeding scans and the progress of artificial insemination (AI) work in horses.

Kita terus berusaha untuk meningkatkan fasilitas penunjang ketrampilan. Harapanya skill dasar maintenance anesthesia seperti monitoring jantung, pernapasan, kesadaran dll dapat dikuasai oleh lulusan.

Did you know that it is often a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) or supervised Student Veterinary Nurse (SVN) that monitors your pet under anaesthesia when they have an operation or procedure performed? This is one of the key daily roles of RVNs & SVNs in practice which are performed under the direction of the Veterinary Surgeon (VS).

RVNs are trained to monitor & assess your pets heart rate, breathing rate, temperature, blood pressure, gum colour, anaesthetic depth, and lots more. They will be monitoring your pet very closely for complications or adverse events to which they will take appropriate action under the direction of the VS.

It is very much a combined team effort to keep your pets safe when they come in for procedures.

RVNs can study further in anaesthesia & analgesia post qualification which enables them to have an advanced level of knowledge in this clinical area
