After 50 years of walking the same route around Bambu Indah , watching the trash pile up became impossible to ignore. So the walks turned into cleanups using a spear-like tool designed by Peter Barge to pick up trash without touching it directly, then dropping it straight into a custom over-the-shoulder bag designed by Jaclyn Hodes of AWAVEAWAKE

What’s meant to be a chore has turned out to be genuinely fun morning out about, often with the Bambu Indah team. Come back with a bag of trash and we’ll treat you to breakfast at the River Warung!

We are sitting on land that the Balinese have been gardening for a 1000 years to produce food for themselves and their families. Bali was herbs and gardens and paddies. When the grandmothers and grandfathers and everybody in the family tended the land because their land created food.

Regeneration is the key word here.

It’s absolutely essential that we let Bali, the land of Bali, continue to produce food.

With The green wizard experimenting with betutu, an ancestral Balinese technique where meat is slow-cooked underground.

Traditionally, it’s made with duck, but this time, we wanted to see what would happen if we applied the same process to goat.

Some cuts were seasoned only with salt, to better understand the meat’s flavour, while others were marinated in familiar spices.

The duck was prepared in traditional bumbu Bali, while the goat was done in two ways: one with rendang, a classic Indonesian curry paste, and the other with guling, a marinade typically used for Balinese pork.

Simple, traditional dishes made for sharing.

Rethinking how a structure meets its surroundings often begins by letting go of convention.

For too long, architecture has been shaped by ideas of permanence, of fixed forms imposed onto landscapes.

A matriarchal approach offers something different. It allows a building to exist in relationship with its environment, rather than in opposition to it.

We call this a celebration of the matriarchy of the future.

This Mother’s Day, my heart is full.

I am the proud mother of two daughters who inspire me every single day. Their strength, grace, and the women they have become fill me with more joy than words can express.

I’m equally blessed with stepchildren and grandchildren who’ve each brought their own unique light into my life in ways I never could have dreamed up.

My mother passed away last July at 92. I think about you always Mom. I wish I could go back and do a lot of it differently. I thank you for your patience and constant acceptance of me. I will love you forever and always; thank you for being my mom. Without you, I would never be here.

I’m also deeply grateful for my sister-in-law and her sons and their wives. Motherhood, in all its many beautiful, messy, magnificent forms, is one of life’s greatest gifts. And like the best things in nature, it grows, it adapts, it surprises you.
Motherhood, in all its forms, is one of life’s greatest gifts.

Happy Mother’s Day to every mother, grandmother, and mother figure in our community. I see you, I celebrate you, and I am so grateful we get to share this journey together. 🌿

The Plant Paradox by reflects many of the ways John and Cynthia have come to think about food.

That it is more than taste or nourishment; it’s information for the body. And you start to notice, over time, what gives you energy and what doesn’t.

They have always leaned toward simple, real food, and ingredients that are close to their source, not over-processed, and easy for the body to recognise.
