WHAT TESOL CERTIFICATE TO GET?

I get a lot of questions from teachers about TESOL certificate. Should I have it? Why should I have it and so on.

If you work as an independent private teacher, then you don't really need this kind of certificate. Because... students don't even know what it is :D But tssss :) However, if you aren't sure about your knowledge and skills in teaching or you want to revise some material then I would definitely recommend you this COURSE. Yes, it's a course, not exam!

If you want to work for a school, then you likely should have a TESOL certificate, but set of requirements varies from school to school.

Anyway, what TESOL course to choose? How to choose it?

It's very important to look at the COMPANY which offers the course. They say, that the only TESOL which is recognized by schools is CertTESOL by Trinity, but it's not true. Most schools write "Trinity or alternative" in their requirements for job seekers.

There are many unaccredited companies which offer this course. Especially those who offer 90% discounts or certificate for $100. These are scams. Don't waste your time and money on them! Such kind of course can't be cheap, because it's a long journey of learning and practising! But...

You can complete TESOL course by Arizona State University and get TESOL certificate from a real American university. The course can be found on COURSERA platform online.

I completed this course last year and finally, all my knowledge was systematized.

Why do I trust this course? Because it is offered by STATE UNIVERSITY. Here I don't have a headache with accreditation and license.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO ALL ENGLISH TEACHERS!

PRIVATE TEACHING = A BUSINESS

If you treat your private teaching like a business, then you do the following:

1) Marketing. Yes, it's in the first place. If you don't do marketing, then you will never find motivated students who take learning seriously. Yes, you can find students without marketing among your friends, your acquaintances and your friends' friends who will cancel classes every now and then. Some students could be found through word-of-mouth recommendations, but in this case your students should be really satisfied with your service. To achieve that...

2) You should work well i.e. to bring your students to the results they want.

3) Self-development. I agree that most students are not interested in your certificates and achievements. BUT. Is the study process before getting any certificate uninteresting? It is wonderful if you have your degree, but it would be more beneficial FOR YOU (and your students) if you kept your knowledge and skills up to date.

4) Investments. Any business needs investments. You should contribute your time, money and efforts to succeed. If you don't do this, then don't be surprised at the poor result.

5) Patience. Don't expect good results immediately. Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that. Personally I spent 3 years to build stability and get descent income. Somebody willfind the shorter way, somebody - longer. The key point is to stay consistent and patient.

This is a minimum you can do to develop your business. If you do all these things, you will definitely succeed.

❓Do you do all abovementioned things? 🙂 Leave your comment below!

WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?

I want, everyone wants. But today we are talking about a game 😀 It's ridiculous that nowadays children don’t really know about this game.

You can create this game for your classes here:
SUPERTEACHERTOOLS.US/MILLIONAIRE
🙂 It is so close to the original version! Especially I like those sounds and visual effects 😍.

Your student can even use the following hints: ask the audience, 50:50 and phone-a-friend.

I prefer to test my students' grammar knowledge with this game. For example, instead of the usual test, you can play a millionaire, and a stressful tests suddenly becomes fun 😃

❓ Do you use “Who wants to be a millionaire?” in your classes?

THE MAIN PRIVATE TUTORS’ PROBLEM

Sometimes it seems to me that the main problem of tutors is that they compare themselves with colleagues. This leads to a lot of other problems.

We compare ourselves with others by:
👉🏻 education/certificates
👉🏻 cost of services
👉🏻 services
👉🏻 number of students
👉🏻 experience
👉🏻 content

I said "we" , because as soon as I got into tutoring, I immediately began to compare myself with others.

That tutor has obtained 1000 certificates, had 100 years of work experience, completed 500 courses, and I’m💩

It doesn’t matter, that tutor is like 45 y.o. and I’m just 25 and I’ve just got my MA degree 😀

Only 2 years later after completing my MA, I’ve realized that IT is NOT NECESSARY to COMPARE MYSELF WITH OTHERS.

Everything is relative. You need to work in a way that makes YOU feel comfortable.

✅Work at the rate that is beneficial for YOU (just please, not for $10 😃 because $10 are not about benefit, it’s about lack of confidence).
✅ Work as many hours as YOU feel comfortable with (even if it's just 5 hours a week).
✅ After each course you’ve completed, apply your obtained knowledge in your classes. Don’t lose it!
✅ Use as many extra materials as enough for YOU to achieve a teaching goal (sometimes only a textbook and your imagination are enough to achieve it).
✅ Compare yourself with YOURSELF! Look at what kind of tutor you were three years ago, what results you achieved, and what kind of tutor you have become! I am 100% sure that your lessons and yourself have changed a lot for the better. So isn't that motivation?

❓ Do you notice your progress or ignore it? Do you compare yourself with others?
