ELTE Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest, Facuty of Social Sciences The leaders of the research group are Ildikó Barna and Renáta Németh.

The RC2S2 (Research Center for Computational Social Science) research group was established at the Faculty of Social Sciences, ELTE Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest, in 2018. Our research team uses methods of data mining and text mining to analyse textual data available on the internet or digitalized offline texts. We also develop data visualization solutions. Our research topics are diverse,

Dorina Vajda – ELTE Research Center for Computational Social Science 02/06/2026

We warmly welcome Dorina Vajda to our research center! Dorina graduated from our faculty’s MSc program in Survey Statistics and Data Analytics; her research topic is the labor market impacts of artificial intelligence (advisors: Márton Czirfusz and Renáta Németh), but thanks to her extensive methodological knowledge and several years of research experience, she is also involved in our other research projects.

Dorina Vajda – ELTE Research Center for Computational Social Science Dorina Vajda holds master’s degrees in Survey Statistics, and Sociology and Social Anthropology. Currently, she is a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Eötvös Loránd University, and she is working as a public opinion researcher.

Our new paper in Ampersand (Q1), it examines whether LLMs are capable of annotating categories that are neither mutually exclusive nor trivial from a hermeneutic perspective.
The findings highlight both the potential and the interpretive limits of LLMs in social science applications, underscoring the importance of careful annotation design and the thoughtful integration of LLMs into human-centered workflows.

AI Prompting for Everyone 01/05/2026

AI Prompting for Everyone, by Andrew Ng. The ways we prompt AI are very different in 2026 than 2022 when ChatGPT came out. Some people are still using LLMs primarily by asking them short questions. But the models can do much more, like think for minutes, ingest many documents as context, and use web search and other tools. Ng is teaching a new course, AI Prompting for Everyone, to help everyone become an AI power user — whatever their current skill level — and prompt LLMs to take advantage of their latest capabilities. The course covers skills that apply to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and other AI tools.

AI Prompting for Everyone Become an AI power user in this new course taught by Andrew Ng. From finding information to building apps, you'll develop the prompting skills that get real, useful results from today's most powerful AI models.

Jakab Buda presented at the COMPTEXT conference in Birmingham. In his presentation (Corpus simulation to better understand the empirical behavior of bag-of-word topic models) he introduced a synthetic corpus simulation and model evaluation framework designed to better understand how different noise present in real world text data effects the result of bag-of-words topic models. The research is supported by the University Research Scholarship Programme (EKÖP).

Márton Gosztonyi presented at the STS NL Conference 2026 (titled Knowledge & Technology in TimeS of Global Shifts), organized by the University of Twente in the Netherlands, in Enschede, Netherlands, on April 15, 2026.
The title of the presentation was “Boundary-Work by Artificial Intelligence: How Large-Language Models Govern Sensitive Public Discourse Across User Personas,” which presented the results of research conducted jointly with Ildikó Barna, Renáta Németh, and Haseeb Raza.
The research examines how large language models shape socially sensitive discourses in different user contexts. Conference details: https://www.utwente.nl/en/bms/sts-nl2026/

Congratulations to Sercan Kiyak (KU Leuven, Faculty of Social Sciences) on defending his PhD thesis today! Renáta Németh, co-leader of our research center, was also an opponent of his dissertation. We have been working with Sercan for three years, with the support of the CELSA Research Fund, on NLP research into migration discourses with the Leuven research group, of which he, Leen d'Haenens (PI, Sercan’s supervisor) and Cecil Meeusen are members. On the Hungarian side, in addition to Renáta, Jakab Buda and Márton Gosztonyi are supporting the research under the leadership of Ildikó Barna. We plan to continue this fruitful cooperation beyond the supported period.
