November 18th is significant in Haitian history as the date of the Battle of Vertières in 1803, the final major battle of the Haitian Revolution. On this day, the Haitian army defeated Napoleon’s French forces, which was a decisive victory that paved the way for Haiti to declare its independence as the world’s first free Black republic on January 1, 1804.

The HERO base in Montrouis was attacked and looted yesterday, a stark reminder of the dire circumstances facing residents in the region. Although we hadn’t occupied the base for over a year due to insecurity in the region, it had provided vital medical care to the community for nearly 5 years. This incident reinforces our commitment to enhancing emergency medical services in Haiti, and we will continue to adapt, grow, and strengthen to support those in need. 🇭🇹

Dr.Chopra’s willingness to come provide in-service training with us in Port-au-Prince during the ongoing crisis is admirable. Not only did he work alongside our team in Petionville and CAP, but he also accompanied our teams past the front lines into red zones, to make sure he was able to deliver the best possible training and advisement to match our daily reality. He has come to support us several times in Haiti and his continued involvement even while back in the USA is valuable.

During the earthquake disaster response 4 years ago in Haiti, HERO assisted all active agencies in managing upwards of 200 medical cases per day on the busiest days of the 4 week long crisis period.

These photos show results from a targeted alert system we were testing with Digicel during part of that disaster response period. In a collaborative effort between HERO and Digicel, we put out targeted text messages to only reach phones in very specific areas, alerting the most remote villages of the exact time and location that we would send a helicopter the next day. The system worked, the people trusted the message and brought their wounded to the specified field and waited. We were able to discover many patients in dire need who otherwise may not have been found.
