When fact-checking media information, it is effective to use the “5W+H” framework adapted for media literacy. Here are 6 key questions:
1. Who created this? (Who is the author or organization behind the post?)
2. What is the source? (What are the sources of evidence and are they reliable/primary?)
3. Why was this written? (What is the purpose: informing, selling, entertainment, or persuasion/propaganda?)
4. When was this published? (Is the information current or is old content being taken out of context?)
5. Where else is this being reported? (Are other relevant media outlets reporting on this as well?)
6. How do I feel about this? (Does the content affect my emotions and is it trying to trigger a reaction?)

Matija, IT expert, project participant. Artificial intelligence can enhance media literacy by quickly analyzing large volumes of information, identifying misinformation, and personalizing educational content for users. However, it can also introduce risks such as reinforcing biases, generating misleading or false information, and reducing critical thinking if users rely on it too heavily. Therefore, while AI is a powerful tool for improving media literacy, it must be used carefully and alongside human judgment.

Fact-checking is the process of verifying the accuracy of information by examining evidence, consulting reliable sources, and cross-checking claims before accepting them as true. In the digital age, checking facts isn’t optional—it’s essential for responsible and informed participation. It helps prevent the spread of misinformation and ensures that decisions and opinions are based on trustworthy, confirmed facts.

Not all information is true. Some of it is designed to confuse and divide. This is why media literacy is no longer an option – it is a basic skill for every citizen. Democracy depends not only on institutions but also on people who think clearly and can tell the difference between truth and falsehood.
Natalija Kanački, project participant.
Media literacy is extremely important today because we live in an age of constant information flow through the internet, social networks, and various media.
