Three inspiring days of learning, discussion, and exchange at the international workshop “The Migration Transition in Croatia – Current State and Perspectives.” 🌍
From 27–29 October in Zagreb, experts, practitioners, and community representatives came together to explore how migration and integration processes are shaping Croatia’s demographic and social landscape.
👉 Day 1 presented research findings from Croatia and other European countries on migration trends, demographic shifts, and integration frameworks.
👉 Day 2 focused on exchange between Croatian government institutions, employers, employment agencies, and NGOs — highlighting challenges and solutions in managing migration and supporting returnees.
👉 Day 3 (NECE Lab) connected European and Croatian NGOs who shared their experiences in supporting migrants and strengthening local communities.
💡 Key messages we’re taking away:
Integration starts before migration — with fair information, language learning, and realistic expectations.
It’s a two-way process built on trust, cooperation, openness, and participation.
Sustainable integration requires coordination among institutions, employers, and communities, and the building of cross-sector alliances.
A big thank-you to all participants for their engagement, and to our partners and organizers — Institut društvenih znanosti Ivo Pilar, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Kroatien/Slowenien and ERSTE Foundation, with the support of THE CIVICS Innovation Hub — for making this event possible. 🙌
Special thanks to our keynote speakers Prof. Dr. Anne White (UCL) and Dr. Niklas Harder (DeZIM-Institut) for their inspiring contributions and valuable perspectives!

🔹The concept of trust in civic education (linked to all NECE formats in 2026, including the NECE Festival)
🔹Democratic resilience
🔹Loneliness and radicalisation of young people
🔹Polarisation or peace-building with polarised groups
