ABOUT ME:
I was born in April 1961 in Split, where I graduated from the School of Arts in 1979. I became a member of the Croatian Association of Independent Artists in 1989. I am primarily a sculptor, and up to this date I have held 32 acclaimed individual exhibitions in Croatia
and beyond, and taken part in more than 50 group exhibitions across the world. In my artwork I mostly use the papier-mâché technique, which I have perfected during many years of research and experiment. Today I am probably the only sculptor in Croatia using this technique as a primary mode of artistic expression. In my work I have discovered that papier-mâché provides virtually endless possibilities, which – as years went by - has made me more and more enthusiastic and excited about the technique. I wished to share this enthusiasm with others, which resulted in a series of papier-mâché workshops in Croatia, Japan, Germany, Israel, USA and elsewhere, through which I helped many people become more creative and more aware of “art potentials” in their environment, turning ordinary objects of consumption into gifts, home decorations and – why not – artistic exhibits. As a rule, the feedback I obtain from these workshops is extremely positive, with many participants claiming they have discovered a creative part of their personality they hadnt been aware before. In 2007 I published a book entitled My Papier-Mâché, written in Croatian and translated into English and German, which includes the concrete “to-do” steps based on my own experience, ideal as a supplement for those who attend the workshops, or as a manual for those who wish to develop the technique on their own. Although as artist I have been primarily focused on sculpture, I also have a keen interest in photography, graphic and jewellery design. Some of my recent exhibitions have been of an “eclectic” nature – combining these different techniques. My previous art projects have also included independent stage set designs, masks, art props and costume designs for various acclaimed theatre performances in Croatia, as well as illustrations of children´s books and picture postcards. All of these are dear to me, and I continue exploring new modes of expression, both within the world of papier-mâché and beyond. I speak English and have experience in communicating with international audiences. My work can be seen at the following website: www.nivescicinsain.com
