Adriatic Maritime Institute Preserving maritime heritage by using traditional boats as a platform for youth development

Adriatic Maritime Institute was started in 2010 and is committed to the preservation of Croatia’s maritime heritage. The goals of AMI are:
• To train young people in the craft of sail and how to operate traditional vessels underway.
• To Work with local organizations and youth groups to incorporate traditional vessels into their curriculum.
• To help owners of vessel find new and exciting was to k

eep the vessels working by changing the focus from traditional work to sustainable tourism and environmental education programs.
• To Document Local Vessels and site of Nautical Importance. The Founder of AMI, James Bender, came to Croatia in 2009 and began working with local organizations to help include traditional vessels in local youth programs. James was featured in several local magazines and newspapers because of these exploits. Sailing to Palagruza aboard the vessel Slobodna Dalmacija with partners from Outward Bound Croatia, ARS Halieutica and a crew from Maestral Children’s home cemented these relationships and they have been partners ever since.

Vinka has splashed. Since before the pandemic Vinka has been in the workshop. Today finally she made it out with a new keel, planking, and a motor among other things. Her first voyage begins next week with the Kornati adventure.

just spent the past week in Croatia. A quick trip if that. This week we are nearing the culmination of a four year restoration on “Vinka,” a historic boat built in 1937. Alongside Barba Ive, the master carpenter, and shipwright, and his son Bosko we put the finishing touches so that she will be ready to launch this summer. The word šminka means to get dressed up, put on makeup, like fancy, ready for town, or a date. That’s what we did this week. She is looking good!

Keeping the spirit alive in boats and voyages ~~~ Fair winds!~~~~

For the 20th time in modern history, members of the Chumash Indian community will paddle across the Santa Barbara Channel on a 24-mile journey to Santa Cruz Island in a traditional Chumash tomol plank canoe called Muptami, or “Deep Memories.” This crossing, planned for Saturday, Sept. 10, will continue the cultural tradition of crossing the channel in a tomol to the Channel Islands as the Chumash did for thousands of years.
