Prof. Gordon Mathewsโ€™ acclaimed book, Ghetto at the Center of the World: Chungking Mansions, Hong Kong, has profoundly shaped our understanding of low-end globalisation and cultural intersections. However, the dynamics of globalisation and cultural identity extend far beyond a single building, permeating our daily lives and diverse communities.

Inspired by his groundbreaking research, this interactive workshop centres on open dialogue. Using Prof. Mathews' work as a point of departure, participants are encouraged to expand the conversation, sharing their own anthropological observations and reflections. Rather than a traditional lecture, this is a collaborative space for students to exchange ideas and unpack broader themes of culture and urban spaces together.

The presentation will focus on design research in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam and Cambodia. The tropical landscape is challenged not only by the consequences of global warming, but also by frantic urban developmentโ€”resulting in near ecological collapse. A method of design research will be revealed via the work of an in-progress book, The Mekong Delta: A World of Mud & People Passing By. Looking Backwards 2100-1000 BC. It includes three sections: (1) Settling (with) the Mekong Delta: A Register of Traces (interwoven with canonical and varied iconography, drawn from archival material, literature and photography, fieldwork notes and drawings assembled during decades of research and presence in the region); (2) A World of Settlement Variations: A Mekong Delta Atlas (focuses on the contemporary โ€˜as foundโ€™ context as critically interpreted through fieldwork); and (3) Re-Settling (with) the Mekong Delta: A Collection of Tracings for an Inhabited Tropical Park (developed as speculative design research across scales).

Finally, several projects, across scales, will demonstrate how Indigenous knowledge systems and practices (IKSP) can provide lessons for contemporary challenges of global warming and the socio-cultural crises.

Congratulations to our alumni Tai Cheuk Wai, Cho Lok Man, Yuen Wan Ching and Ling Pak Wai for winning the Champion of the Revamp of Sau Mau Ping Road Safety Town Design Competition in the Professional Category. We are pleased to share their project "Smart Playscape" and award moments with you.

Smart Playscape

โ€œSmart Playscapeโ€ focuses on transforming Sau Mau Ping Road Safety Town into an inclusive hub for children, families, and seniors. Our proposal features a transparent entrance and vibrant road graphics to bring in more visitors. An innovative ramp offers multi-dimensional learning on road safety, and integrated digital tools provide immersive educational experiences. The design promotes community engagement and safer travel habits, combining safety education with leisure. Ultimately, this renovation aims to create a model Road Safety Town that fosters connections and reduces accidents through proactive education.

Juror Comments

The jurors commended the team's project for its strong and compelling focus on road safety, recognising its robust connection with the community. They praised the effective interior layout and the strategic exterior connections, particularly the footbridge and inclusive ramp access, which was noted as an exemplary feature catering to users of all ages. The emphasis on the height of the footbridge, enhanced by a vibrant use of colour, effectively promoted the theme of road safety. Additionally, the integration of technology with the physical structure of the footbridge was applauded as a forward-thinking initiative that highlights the future of road safety education.

Congratulations to these young architects!

Recent years have seen a surge of publications and exhibitions rethinking Hong Kongโ€™s postwar architecture. Moving beyond conventional approaches that treat buildings as isolated objects, these projects link as-built work with unbuilt proposals and other documentary materials, opening multiple readings and new perspectives on the cityโ€™s architectural and urban past.

This seminar brings together four architectural scholars to discuss new practices in curation, documentation and publication, and to consider how critical engagement with the archive can reshape public understanding and scholarly discourse on modern architecture in Hong Kong and beyond.

The AA has produced 4 Pritzker prize winners, 22 RIBA gold medallists and 13 Stirling prize winners but with the Pritzker prize on hold and the primacy of big names and big projects in question, itโ€™s time to rethink what makes the AA a world leader and the value of our historic radicalism.

As we face unprecedented levels of uncertainty we need to keep an open mind and maybe itโ€™s time to return to our original motto Design in Beauty Build in Truth. With this in mind I will be exploring how care and skill may well be the new avant-garde, and craft a consistent form of advanced experimentation.

Uniquely positioned within the Faculty of Social Science, the CUHK Master of Science in Landscape Architecture (MLA) addresses the urgent global challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. Our programme is founded on the principle that effective environmental solutions require a deep integration of ecological science and human dynamics. This principle redefines landscape architecture as a critical form of agencyโ€”a discipline of intervention that acts creatively and responsibly to shape resilient societies where nature and people thrive.

This two-year program cultivates a new generation of landscape architects: skilled designers, critical thinkers, proactive doers, and visionary leaders. Integrating design innovation with an entrepreneurial mindset, the program empowers students to create sustainable solutions, drive climate action, and launch new initiatives in the emerging green economy. Graduates are prepared for diverse careers in landscape architecture, ecological consultancy, urban planning, and green entrepreneurship.
