📖Are you a HKBUer? How much do you know about the HKBU history?
🏫 It's been over half a month since the start of the new semester. How are all the HKBU freshmen?🤔 Do you all feel more familiar with HKBU?
💡 Let me ask you a question! Do you know which is the first building of HKBU? Also, this building was completed in which year?
📚 Hong Kong Baptist University was established as Hong Kong Baptist College in 1956. In the early days, the college borrowed some classrooms from Pui Ching Middle School as its campus until it received government land to build a permanent campus in 1957.📰 The "Chinese Newspaper Clippings Database" developed by includes valuable reports about the development of the new campus, from fundraising for construction to its completion, documenting the university's founding journey in detail.📈
💰 As the college extension project was large in scale and budget, the Baptist Convention of Hong Kong established a fundraising committee in 1963 and designated that year as the "Fundraising Year" to raise funds specifically for this project. A news from 1963 in our database shows the related appeal for donations and the acknowledgment of the multiple donations received. 🤝🏻
🏗️ This new building was completed on May 1st, 1966, and the opening ceremony was held on October 21th of the same year. A news report from 1966 gives us a glimpse of what the new building looks like when it is completed.🧐 Can you recognize the location of this building now?

What are the five essential things to do in university? Recommended reading for the new semester: A Bachelor Is Born 🎓📖📖
📖 It's back-to-school season! As a newcomer, you must feel excited and unfamiliar with the university campus!🙌🏻 How will you plan your 4 years of university life?🤔💭
⏱️ When planning university life, everyone hopes to have a memorable campus experience. In recent year, the "five essential things to do in university" becomes an indicator of whether university life is fulfilling. Actually, it is nothing new! In the classic film “A Bachelor Is Born”, an university student Li Shuhua tried several of these things.📚 The 's Hong Kong TV and Film Publication Database holds the 1950 film pamphlet of “A Bachelor Is Born”, giving everyone a glimpse into his school life!🧐
📽️ The film told the story of a tailor Li Achang (played by Soo Chin), who hopes his son Li Shuhua (played by Liu Qiong) to become a "senior official" or a "businessman". Therefore, he worked so hard to support his son’s education, so that he would earn the "square academic cap" and live an "upper-class" life. However, when the humble yet ambitious Shuhua befriended privileged classmates, his campus life dramatically changed, and his personality was gradually transformed.
🏫 To shorten commuting time or to make more friends, many university students will choose to "live on campus," and Shuhua is no exception.🛌 Because of his excellent academic performance, Shuhua was assigned to live in the same dormitory with the minister's son Yang Kailing (played by Han Fei) and his sidekick Zhang Zhiliang (played by Gam Sha). However, he had to do their homework for them✍🏻.
💰 Many university students will also take on part-time jobs in their spare time to earn living expenses.🚚📦 Shuhua once worked in for his father's tailor shop to deliver goods, but he was scolded by his father for doing "low-class" work, so he did not continue. Influenced by his privileged classmates, Shuhua gradually became arrogant, displaying a spoiled attitude🙎🏻♂️, even refusing to do housework🧹.
🎓 After many ups and downs, Shuhua finally graduated and earned the “square academic cap" that his father had dreamed of. However, he immediately faced the dilemma of being unable to find a good job.🙏🏻 With no other options, he found Yang Kailing, who had become the chairman of a company, to plead for a job, but was rejected.💪🏻 Meanwhile, the call for the anti-Japanese war of resistance grew louder. This led him to reflect on the meaning of the “square academic cap", which was no longer about befriending the powerful or pursuing wealth and status, but rather about taking on social responsibilities.
💡 Studying is not only to satisfy the thirst for knowledge, but also to improve our living conditions and even change our society. What does the "square academic hat" mean to you? 🖥️🖱️ Feel free to visit our database, search for the keyword "大學," and check out the collection of “A Bachelor Is Born” (1950) to see what insights Shuhua's story can bring you!

⏳ During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, which lasted for "three years and eight months" (from December 25, 1941, to August 30, 1945), the Parsi businessman Jehangir Hormusjee Ruttonjee was deeply affected by the war.🤝🏻 However, whether before, during, or after the war, he consistently dedicated himself to Hong Kong through practical actions.
🍺 Before the war, Ruttonjee inherited his father's liquor business. In 1930, he established the "Hong Kong Brewery & Distillery Ltd.", laying the foundation for beer production in Hong Kong.⚒️ At that time, he not only employed many local residents but also funded the establishment of a dispensary 💊, a library 📚, and a church ⛪ near the brewery, providing employment, education, medical care, and spiritual support to the local community.
🪖 During the Japanese occupation, the Japanese military confiscated Ruttonjee's brewery and tried to coerce him into opposing the British,🙅🏻 but he refused.💪🏻 Instead, he was passionate about helping socially disadvantaged groups. For example, he sheltered members of the Parsi community who remained in Hong Kong, providing them with medical and educational services.🤫 Ruttonjee also secretly smuggled food and medicine into POW camps and opened a canteen to covertly gather intelligence on the Japanese military.🗡️🩸 Unsurprisingly, these actions angered the Japanese military, leading to the arrest of Ruttonjee and his son, who were subjected to inhumane treatment.
🏳️ After the Japan's surrender, Ruttonjee used the supplies left by the Japanese military to produce the first batch of beer after the war.🍻 This small batch of beer symbolized the victory of the resistance 🎉.🌏 He then embarked on a journey around the world, passing through several war-torn places to understand the post-war reconstruction and development in various regions, which strengthened his resolve to continue his charitable work in Hong Kong.💰 In 1950, he donated 500,000 HKD (the largest private charitable donation since the opening of Hong Kong),🏗️ to rebuild the Royal Naval Hospital in Wan Chai and 🩺💉 establish the "Ruttonjee Sanatorium" (now known as Ruttonjee Hospital).

From War to Reconstruction: The Historical Trajectory of the British Army Aid Group🪖
🏳️ After the fall of Hong Kong in December 1941, over ten thousand Allied servicemen became prisoners of war (POWs) and interned in different POW camps. Meanwhile, the British’s intelligence system in Hong Kong collapsed rapidly, making it difficult for the Allied to grasp the situation in Hong Kong.🏃🏃🏻
💨 Among all the interned POWs, the commandant of the Royal Hong Kong Regiment (The Volunteers) Sir Lindsay Tasman Ride hatched his escape plan with his assistant Lee Yiu Piu.📍 After successfully escaping from the Sham Shui Po POW camp, they went to mainland China and established the British Army Aid Group (BAAG) in Qujiang, Guangdong. During the war, BAAG assisted in various tasks, including contacting POWs and civilian internees as well as collecting intelligence.
🏗️ After the war, BAAG was disbanded, but its members remained actively participate in the reconstruction of Hong Kong.💥 After the victory over Japan in 1945, the Chinese Civil War broke out.📈 As mainland residents migrated south, the local population increased dramatically, leading to housing shortages and deteriorating living conditions. This ultimately led to the establishment of the Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) in 1948.
🤝🏻 One of the senior commanders of the BAAG, Sir John Douglas Clague, joined HKHS in 1952 and served as chairmen for 29 years,🏘️ dedicating himself to develop various housing schemes to meet the needs of poor citizens.🌹 In recognition of his contributions to the housing development in Hong Kong, HKHS named its first "Flat-for-Sale Scheme" estate after him as "Clague Garden Estate."
