๐Ÿงฌโœจ The BSc in Biomedical & Health Sciences (BMH) Orientation Events were held on August 20 & 24, 2026 to welcome new students to the Program.

Various talks were given by faculty and staff, including by the BMH Program Director, Prof. Ho Yi MAK. The students had a fantastic time and made new friendships! ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿค

Hereโ€™s to a brilliant adventure ahead! Let the discoveries begin! ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ“š

๐ŸŽ‰ Congratulations to Prof. Ho Yi MAK, his former PhD students Yan LI and Siwei HUANG, and the whole research team! ๐Ÿ‘

Their new paper, "A conserved ER protein prevents lipotoxicity by stimulating the key enzyme in glycerolipid synthesis," has just been published in Nature Communications! ๐ŸŒŸ

How do cells survive a "high-fat diet"? Excess free fatty acids cause toxic stress (lipotoxicity), so cells must quickly convert and lock them away inside lipid droplets.

Prof. Makโ€™s team discovered the "booster switch" for this vital defense mechanism! Using genetic, biochemical, and imaging techniques, they found that an ER protein (TMEM120A) teams up with another protein (CHP1) to supercharge GPAT4โ€”the cell's main fat-packing enzyme.

The researchers proved how vital this is, showing that lacking this system causes sterility in C. elegans fed a high-fat diet! ๐Ÿชฑ๐Ÿงซ

In mammalian cells, excess fat triggers the trio of proteins to bind tighter together to rapidly boost protective lipid synthesis. Ultimately, this accelerated lipid storage mechanism successfully saves the cell from fat-induced damage! From nematodes to mammalian cells, this is a beautifully conserved mechanism showing exactly how cells dynamically adapt their machinery to survive toxic fat overload! ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ๐Ÿ’ง

From Stockholm to Hong Kong ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ชโ†’๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ฐ Five months as an exchange student at KTH have come to an end, and they changed my dream.

Advanced master-level courses deepened my love for life sciences at the molecular & genetic level โ€” a passion Iโ€™ll carry into Professor Angela Wuโ€™s genomic research at HKUST this summer. Along the way, insights from AstraZeneca, Amgen & Karolinska Institutet opened my eyes to the future of biotech.

But the biggest lesson was personal: a slower, more deliberate pace, outdoor runs, quiet fika, and the independence that comes from navigating somewhere new. Forever grateful. Tack, Stockholm! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›
