According to Prof. Wang Binhua, Large Language Models still face the challenge of the ‘black box’, meaning that the mechanisms through which they produce particular translations remain difficult to explain. 🤖❓

Unlike professional interpreters, who work within established professional ethical standards and are accountable, AI systems generate translations by identifying patterns in large volumes of language data and do not possess an intrinsic ethical framework. In translation tasks that require careful attention to cultural meaning and contextual understanding, human interpreters remain indispensable in making informed judgements about interpersonal relationships, rhetorical choices, and cultural expression. 🧠💡

AI翻譯較難掌握語境及文化修辭 仍難取代專業人類傳譯 🗣️✨

王斌華教授近日發表於《自然》旗下《人文與社會科學通訊》期刊的合作研究顯示，AI的大型語言模型仍存在「黑盒」（black-box）問題，其運作機制及如何形成特定翻譯結果至今仍難以完全解釋。🤖❓

與受專業倫理規範的人類譯員不同，AI主要依賴大量數據中的語言模式生成譯文，本身並沒有內在的邏輯和倫理框架。因此，在涉及文化內涵及需要仔細掌握語境的翻譯工作下，人類譯員在人際關係、語氣及文化修辭等方面作出更切合語境的判斷，反映其專業判斷仍然不可或缺。🧠💡

Prof. Wang Binhua, Professor of the Department of Translation and Head of the Centre for English and Additional Languages (CEAL), pointed out that AI does not mean an end to translation; rather, it has ushered in an evolution of the language services industry. As technology continuously evolves, a diverse range of posts are emerging. In response, universities are keeping pace with the times by integrating AI applications and technological tools into their curricula, thereby enhancing students' competitive edge in the workplace.

Welcome to our brand-new online exhibition. This exhibition brings together the work of students from TRA4327 Eco-Translation at Lingnan University, taught by Prof. Darryl Sterk. Each student chose a species from Hong Kong's urban and wild landscapes — a tree, an insect, a bird, a reptile — and translated it verbally and visually.

Every leaf, every scale, every wing is a small act of attention — an encounter with the natural world rendered into words and images for others to discover.

This programme features a unique cross-cultural experience, offering hands-on research training at Lingnan, followed by a two-week academic and cultural journey at the University of Oxford at the end of June.

Let’s hear what Binbin has to say about this exciting opportunity:
“I am honoured to have been selected for the summer school programme organised jointly by Lingnan University and the University of Oxford, and I would like to thank Lingnan University for providing this valuable opportunity. The MA in Translation Studies programme at Lingnan University strikes a balance between theory and practice, whilst also offering courses that integrate cutting-edge AI technology. It has not only enabled me to hone my practical translation skills but also prepared me to meet the challenges posed by technological changes. I look forward to engaging with scholars from around the world at Oxford and broadening my academic horizons.”

On 29 May, Prof. Isaac Hui and our BA alumna Anson Yu (Class of 2023) participated in the Reception for Principals and Teachers organised by the Registry.

They connected with principals and teachers from local secondary schools. As a distinguished alumna, Anson not only shared her inspiring journey and reflections on her studies at Lingnan, but also showcased her professional skills as the moderator hosting a key session.

In the era of AI, how is translation studies relevant? Prof. Wang Binhua from Lingnan University’s Department of Translation recently spoke to the Hong Kong Economic Times about how the department is proactively transforming to boost students’ employability. 🚀

“In universities we are embracing and leveraging AI technology. Our role is to nurture a new generation of talent with expertise in languages, culture, and AI. To lead this shift, Lingnan has launched cutting-edge courses like Computer-aided Translation and Translation and AI Industries, and we aim to strike a balance between the responsible use of AI (technical application, ethics, regulation, and data protection) and the core skills in humanities and in the profession that no machine can replicate.”
