🎉 Welcoming a New Cohort of Postgraduate Students! 🎉

The School of Life Sciences, CUHK, was delighted to successfully host orientation sessions for our postgraduate programmes, including the Research Postgraduate (RPG) Programme and the three Taught Postgraduate Programmes: Biochemical and Biomedical Sciences (BBS), Biodiversity, Environmental Management, Sustainability and Technology (BEST), and Nutrition, Food Science and Technology (NFST).

These orientation activities provided an excellent opportunity for new students to learn more about our programmes, meet faculty members and fellow classmates, and begin their academic journey within the SLS community.

🔬胃部裡的生存戰術：幽門螺桿菌如何玩轉「毒藥」？

你以為在強酸性的胃部生存是自殺任務？對幽門螺桿菌（H. pylori）來說，這是一場精密的化學戰爭！最近，中大生命科學學院黃錦波教授團隊的一項研究揭開了這個細菌的「生存秘技」。他們發現，這種病原體竟然學會了如何「駕馭毒藥」。

幽門螺桿菌靠「尿素酶」來中和胃酸，而尿素酶必須靠劇毒的「鎳離子」才能啟動。為了避免中毒，幽門螺桿菌進化出了一套極其精密的「分子快遞系統」：

1️⃣ 雙人接力：伴護蛋白 UreE 與 UreG 互相配合。
2️⃣ 變形傳遞：能量分子 GTP 觸發蛋白質變形並讓兩個蛋白的結合位點精確對齊。
3️⃣ 安全交接：鎳離子從 UreE 轉移到 UreG，最後才送到尿素酶手中，確保「毒藥」絕不洩漏。

這項發現為我們提供了全新的視角，未來若能阻斷這個「快遞系統」，或許就能找到對抗細菌的新武器！

🔬 How does a bacterium survive in your stomach? It plays with "poison"!

Imagine trying to unlock a door, but the key is wrapped in a deadly explosive. One wrong move, and you’re finished. This is exactly the dilemma faced by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). 🦠💥

To survive the harsh acid of the human stomach, H. pylori relies on an enzyme called urease. But there's a catch: urease requires toxic Nickel to function! A research team led by Professor Kam-Bo Wong at CUHK has just revealed how this bacterium solves the problem. They discovered a sophisticated "handover" system:

🔹 The Couriers: Two specialized proteins, UreE and UreG, act as chaperones.
🔹 The Shape-Shift: When an energy molecule (GTP) binds to UreG, the protein changes shape to perfectly align with UreE.
🔹 The Handover: This precise alignment allows nickel to be passed safely from one protein to the other without ever "leaking" into the cell where it could cause harm.

By uncovering these molecular secrets, CUHK’s research opens the door to new treatments that could "block the delivery" and stop the bacteria in its tracks!
