Intern at Homie Living Limited.
Never rest on your laurels, keep working hard because competition is constant.
For the winter semester of 2026, I was an e-commerce digital marketing and operations intern for Homie Living Limited. Every day will be a new challenge; even if the tasks mainly revolve around creative tasks and administrative tasks, each day is different. One day I could be doing customer service, filming a video for a new product, and dealing with logistics for a table shipping to Singapore; hence, every day is a day of learning, a very rewarding experience where the skills and knowledge I gained from this company are unique to it. Some special projects I took part in included preparing the launch of an overseas brand, from seeing it from initial design to creating a content plan, thinking of the project story, editing product photos, etc. After 1 month, a functioning store and website, seeing my hard work coming to fruition, it’s a very satisfying process.
I applied for the internship for one major reason. I wanted to experience and learn from the workplace, as I believe there are things you could not learn from the classroom, skills, and knowledge unique to that environment; for me, it was Shopify SEO, logistics management, brand promotion, and market research. I think it’s a very valuable experience, my first full-time role. I’ve learned how to communicate more effectively, manage a mountain of tasks, and adapt to an ever-changing workplace environment. Some tips for my peers are to never set any expectations of what your internship is to be so that you can fully immerse yourself into your role and your experience there; don’t let the expectation define your internship, as your role is what you make it to be.

BEng in Civil Engineering
Intern at Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd
Engineering is the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the use and convenience of man
I am currently interning at Shanghai Tunnel Engineering, focusing on utilizing Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for drainage improvements in Wong Tai Sin. My role involves assisting in the planning and ex*****on of TBM operations, specifically using the Enhanced Life Support (ELS) method to ensure efficient and safe drilling. Daily tasks include monitoring the drilling process, collecting data, and assisting engineers in troubleshooting any issues that arise. I've also been involved in special projects aimed at mitigating flooding risks in the area, which has given me practical insights into urban infrastructure challenges. This internship has been a meaningful experience, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge from my studies in real-world situations and contributing positively to the community.
I highly encourage my peers to pursue internship opportunities. I was motivated to intern because I wanted hands-on experience in my field, and this has proven to be invaluable. Internships not only enhance your resume but also provide practical skills and insights that you won’t find in a classroom. I have gained valuable industry knowledge, made professional connections, and developed my problem-solving abilities through real projects. For anyone considering their first internship, I recommend being open to learning, asking questions, and taking initiative. Embrace the challenges, as they are great opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Grace yourself with patience—for wisdom blooms only after the soil of not knowing has been turned.
For those preparing for internships soon, finding a suitable internship can be challenging. However, the most difficult part is avoiding overestimating or underestimating yourself. As an HKUST student, you are already brilliant and outstanding enough to compete with other students. So, try to be brave and confident in yourself. Try your best, and you’ll succeed.
Furthermore, always remember that “it’s OK not to be OK.” When I’m talking about your talents and emotions during the internship, it’s OK that you don’t know what to do. It’s OK that you have no idea where to start. It’s OK that you’ve never tried it before. An internship is the best opportunity for you to learn something outside of papers and books—not only professional knowledge or applications, but also how to communicate and work with others in society. It’s OK to feel bad or sad, but that is part of the process of growing and becoming more mature in handling similar obstacles in the future. I have also been through moments of feeling that I’m not going to make it, or repeatedly judging my abilities, and I remember clearly what my senior said to me: “Forgive yourself for not knowing what you didn’t know before you learned it.”
So, the most important thing to note is to trust yourself. Even when facing millions of difficulties, we all believe that USTers are able and capable of breaking through these walls and becoming a better version of themselves.

BEng in Mechanical Engineering
Intern at The Hongkong Electric Co., Ltd
Internship is not just about gaining experience — it’s about discovering your potential and building the confidence to engineer the future.
During the summer of 2025, I completed an eight-week vacation traineeship at The Hongkong Electric Co., Ltd. as a Mechanical Engineering student at HKUST. I was assigned to the Projects Division and worked on the Reprovision of Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGT) project at Lamma Power Station. My responsibilities included reviewing method statements for the unloading and transportation of major power train equipment, assisting in drafting technical specifications for pressure vessel examiner services, and attending site progress meetings. I also conducted site inspections and participated in technical presentations delivered by experienced engineers. One of the highlights was observing the unloading of GT8 using Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMT) and floating cranes. This experience gave me a comprehensive understanding of power generation projects and strengthened my technical and professional skills.
Don’t wait for the “perfect moment” to apply for an internship — take the leap! My time at HK Electric taught me more than just technical skills. I learned how to collaborate with professionals, solve real-world problems, and understand the impact of engineering on society. An internship is where classroom theory meets reality — and that’s where you truly grow.
