The HKUST MSc Programs concluded another 𝗔𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻𝗶 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 with joy and laughter in March. More than 70 alumni of our 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗠𝗙𝗶𝗻) Program from various classes attended the lunch gathering to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Prof. Chu Zhang, Head of Department of Finance and Prof. Zhanhui CHEN, Academic Director of MFin Program, updated the recent development of the Business School and MFin Program with the alumni!

The MFin Class of 2022 and their guests came back to our HKUST campus to attend the SBM Congregation in December. Our graduates took plenty of photos, and celebrated with their classmates and loved ones.

The MFin Graduation Dinner was held at China Garden after the congregation. Our MFin graduates and our faculty members participated in this gathering, to celebrate the graduation and accomplishments. It was a great get-together full of joy and laughter.

WELCOME TO HKUST!

We are pleased to welcome our new MSc in Finance (MFin) students to the Orientation on August 17!

The Academic Director, Prof. CHEN Zhanhui, and our MFin program staff greeted our newcomers in person and online. We were impressed by the near-perfect attendance and this is the largest cohort since our program was established. Over 60 students showed up in person at the Academic Building, and over 150 students joined us virtually.

Our promising alumni, Ms. Kami Bi, Mr. David Hong, Mr. Jesse Co, Mr. Kevin Lee and Mr. Francis Ling, conducted a fruitful sharing session on a wide range of topics like ‘Study Journey at HKUST’, ‘How to Manage Social and Work Life, ‘Market Trend in Blockchain’ etc. The students enjoyed an enthusiastic discussion in which our alumni speakers shared their experiences further and guided our students to explore their career paths.

We hope the hands-on experience students got from the Orientation can ease the academic challenges that lay ahead and transform their careers successfully. Let’s get the ball rolling, and we wish all students, faculty and staff a healthy, rewarding and enriching year ahead.

【MFin Alumni Gather at HKUST Campus!】

The MSc in Finance (MFin) Program Office organized a lunch gathering at the HKUST campus on July 23, 2022.

It has been a long while since our last in-person activity. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the events have been switched to virtual formats. It was incredible to gather over 50 alumni at the UST campus to join this cozy and relaxing luncheon, which provided a good opportunity for them to reminisce about their old days and catch up with each other.

We were glad to have continuous support from different batches of alumni. The Academic Director, Professor Chen Zhanhui, delivered a welcoming remark and updated the alumni on the latest development of the Program.

WELCOME TO HKUST! We were very pleased to welcome our new MSc in Finance (MFin) students for Orientation 2021 on 28 August 2021!

Academic Director, Prof. Peter MACKAY, and our MFin program staff greeted our new-comers both in-person and online. With near-perfect attendance, over 100 students showed up in-person at the LSK Business Building and over 75 students joined us virtually. They had fun competing in a challenging group activity, where each team had to produce a 1-minute trailer for a hypothetical finance-themed movie, all in the space of 75 minutes!

The students took the challenge to heart, showcasing their energy, creativity, and team-working skills. Finance-industry executives, sirs Donald Day, Stan Ho and Simon Andrew Sywak, who were tasked with judging the trailers, were impressed by the talent on display. Their scores and student polls were combined to identify the top three entries for in-person and online participants.

We hope the excitement and camaraderie forged at Orientation carry over to the work hard needed to clear the academic challenges that lie ahead and translate into timely graduation and career success. Let’s keep the momentum going to for a fulfilling and rewarding year for students, faculty, and staff!

On April 24, 2021, the MSc in Finance (MFin) Program hosted Mr. Billy Tea, CEO of Serum of Truth, to speak on the alarming, growing, and costly phenomenon of financial fake news. In his talk, Mr. Téa described some of the psychological factors that predispose people to falling prey to fake news and the rapidly-changing social and technological environments that facilitate the acceptance and dissemination of misinformation and disinformation. More than a passing trend, fake news of every stripe is an affliction with real social, political, and economic consequences, easily topping $78 billion per year and growing. Worse, fakers are in the lead and gaining ground, as Mr. Téa illustrated through examples of sophisticated deep-fake fraud, massive cyber-attacks, and fact-checking defeated by circular reporting and other means.
Awareness and education, Mr. Téa argues, are the first steps in addressing this worrisome phenomenon. The discovery and defense of untainted truth, Academic Director Prof. MacKay stressed, have always been the mission of any self-respecting education institution, which underscores the importance of universities in their service to society. Our sincere thanks to Mr. Téa for raising our collective awareness of this urgent problem and presenting us with preventive measures to identify and counter this affront on truth.
