🌟 PolyU students’ cancer research achieves top honours in innovation and life sciences 🌟

Miss Rainbow Leung Wing Hei (PhD student) and Dr. Martina Lei Mang Leng (graduate) from PolyU’s Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology delivered an exceptional performance at the 12th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.

With their groundbreaking project, “Therapeutic efficacy of peptide-linked chimeric antigen receptor macrophages (pCAR-M) in solid tumors,” the team won the Grand Prize in the Innovation category and the First Prize in the Life Sciences category.

Supervised by Prof. Terence Lee Kin‑wah, Associate Head and Professor, and Prof. Clarence Wong Tsun‑ting, Assistant Professor of the same department, the project pioneers a peptide‑linked system to engineer macrophages instead of T cells, offering a novel approach to treating solid tumours. The pCAR‑M platform is faster, safer, and more accessible, with potential applicability to 92% of malignant tumours, unlocking vast opportunities in the solid-tumour market.

👏 Congratulations to our young innovators for their remarkable achievement!

【PolyU all-acoustics brain-computer interface system forges new paths for Parkinson’s disease therapy✨】

An ageing population is often accompanied by an increase in age‑related disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, an incurable neurodegenerative disorder that impairs body movement and which is mainly alleviated by medicines or surgical procedures.
A research team led by Prof. Sun Lei, Director of the Research Centre for Non-invasive Brain Computer Interface and Prof. Qiu Zhihai, a PhD graduate and Professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at PolyU, has developed the next‑generation “All‑Acoustics Brain‑Computer Interface (BCI) System”, leveraging “transcranial ultrasound neuromodulation” to deliver fully non‑invasive, deep‑brain and high‑precision neural modulation with ultrasound. The system presents a promising new therapeutic approach for treating Parkinson’s disease, as well as other neurological and psychiatric disorders. 💡

The team has validated the technology’s efficacy through animal studies. In the next stage, Prof. Sun will expand the scale of clinical validation. He plans to collaborate with five leading medical centres in China to conduct a clinical study involving 100 Parkinson’s disease patients and systematically assess the ultrasound technique’s safety and efficacy, paving the way for regulatory approval and commercialisation. 🏥 Looking ahead, the team also aims to partner with Hong Kong hospitals for clinical study and develop a more portable household version of the system, enabling patients to receive continuous treatment at home. 💪

【PolyU develops novel antibody targeting fat cell protein, offering new approach to treating metabolism-related liver cancer】

Liver cancer is one of the three deadliest cancers worldwide, and metabolic dysfunction-related cases have become increasingly common in recent years. A research team led by Prof. Terence LEE, Associate Head and Professor of the PolyU Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology has identified an adipocyte-derived protein that promotes cancer growth and has successfully developed a novel antibody that neutralises this protein, marking a significant breakthrough in impeding the progression of liver cancer. The team believes that, as this adipocyte-targeted immunotherapy continues to mature, it will bring more treatment options to MASLD patients.
