The Preliminary Round of the PolyU Young Minds in Computer and Mathematical Sciences Competition 2026 took place yesterday (10 May) on the PolyU campus.

Over 80 teams, bringing together nearly 250 S.4 and S.5 students from secondary schools across Hong Kong, took on a challenging paper-based competition.

Participants tackled questions that tested not only their curriculum knowledge, but also their logical thinking and analytical skills. 📝🧠

30 top-performing teams will advance to the Final Round on 4 July 🏆, where they will compete across three exciting tracks: AI, Applied Mathematics, and Computing.

Interim Dean Prof. Changwen Chen and Associate Dean Prof. Hongxia Yang Named in “PolyU Top 10 Research & Innovation Stories of the Year”

Prof. Chen, Interim Dean of the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FCMS) and Chair Professor of Visual Computing in the Department of Computing, has been recognised for his pioneering work on VideoMind — a novel multi-modal agent developed by his team that enables AI to perform long video reasoning and question-answering tasks by emulating human-like thinking. This breakthrough addresses a key challenge in AI, where existing models often struggle to understand long videos, and it accelerates the development of generative AI-assisted video analysis.

Prof. Yang, Associate Dean (Global Engagement) of FCMS, has also been acknowledged for her ground-breaking work in Generative Artificial Intelligence. As Executive Director of the PolyU Academy for Artificial Intelligence (PAAI) and Chair Professor of Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Computing, she leads her team in reshaping the AI training landscape with Co-GenAI – a novel collaborative paradigm that transforms centralised AI training into a decentralised model, significantly reducing costs and democratising AI research.

The above outstanding research projects were selected as part of “PolyU Top 10 Research & Innovation Stories of the Year” from 20 remarkable research and technology translation stories announced in 2025, following a rigorous evaluation that combined over 7,700 public votes with assessments from a professional judging panel. Collectively, these recognitions reflect the Faculty's commitment to impactful research and innovation.

【Join the PAAI Inauguration cm AI for Health (AI4H) Forum】

To address the pressing challenges in AI development, PolyU has established the PolyU Academy for Artificial Intelligence (PAAI) to provide safer, more efficient, and practical intelligent solutions for key sectors such as healthcare, education and finance.

Join us on 10 December (Wednesday), for the inauguration of PAAI and AI for Health (AI4H) Forum, as well as the two forums held concurrently on the afternoon of the same day: the International Forum on AI 2025 and the PolyU Intelligent Oncology Forum. The event will bring together world-leading scholars and industry leaders to exchange insights on the exploration and practice of cutting-edge AI technologies.
