【理大首屆愛國主義教育研習營西安圓滿結營】
作為理大與西安交通大學共建「愛國主義教育基地」後的首項重點活動，本次研習營由校董會主席林大輝博士及副校長曹建農教授親自帶領，近 50 位師生展開了為期七日的陝西研學之旅。✈️

同學們在行程中親身走訪西安及延安的歷史遺跡、紅色地標與科創平台，實地了解國家的歷史脈絡與現代發展，從文化、歷史到現代科創都有所啟發：
🚩黃帝陵尋根：站在人文初祖之地，真切感受中華文化的深厚底蘊，對炎黃子孫的身份有了更深的認同。
🚩延安精神：欣賞大型情景體驗劇《再回延安》，深刻體會自立自强的信念，了解當下青年勇於承擔、服務社會的責任。
🚩交大西遷博物館：了解當年師生為國家需要毅然西遷的歷史，反思如何發揮自身學科專業，與社會的未來需要接軌。

結營儀式上，林博士勉勵同學用實際行動去愛國，說好中國故事、香港故事、回饋社會、貢獻國家。同學們互相交流所見所感，表示參加研習營後視野變得更立體，甚至重新思考香港青年的時代擔當，期待將個人所學與社會需要緊密聯繫。

研習營雖告一段落，理大將繼續推動多元化的校園活動，全方位、多維度深化學生對國家的認同與文化自信，培育更多擁有家國情懷、具國際視野和社會承擔的理大人。

PolyU's First Patriotic Education Study Tour Concludes Successfully at Xi’an

Led by Council Chairman Dr Lam Tai-fai and Vice President Prof. Cao Jiannong, nearly 50 PolyU staff and students recently completed a transformative 7-day journey through Xi’an and Yan’an.

As the first flagship initiative of the "PolyU Patriotic Education Base" (established in partnership with Xi'an Jiaotong University), the programme seamlessly bridged cultural heritage with modern tech innovation. From exploring ancient roots at the Yellow Emperor’s Mausoleum to learning about the historic "Westward Relocation", students gained profound insights into the Nation's development.

Dr Lam encouraged the delegation to put their values into action, share the unique stories of Hong Kong and the Nation, and actively give back to the community.

PolyU recently participated in the first edition of the France-Hong Kong Universities Forum in Paris, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing commitment to fostering internationalisation and global engagement 🌍🤝.

Co-organised by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao, France Universités, Hong Kong’s University Grants Committee (UGC), and the Heads of Universities Committee’s Standing Committee on Internationalisation (HUCOMSCI), the event aimed to provide a long-term structure for strategic academic cooperations. A major highlight for PolyU was the official signing of a Letter of Intent between Hong Kong institutions and France Universités, cementing PolyU’s shared dedication to promoting global academic exchange and collaborative research 🌍📚.

The comprehensive two-day programme featured expert panel discussions on business innovation, health sciences, and Artificial intelligence, with Prof. Ben Young, our Vice President (Student and Global Affairs), representing PolyU on the AI-driven innovation panel to share PolyU’s institutional vision. PolyU partners with CCB (Asia) to present scholarships, nurturing globally-minded financial talents✨

PolyU and China Construction Bank (Asia) [CCB (Asia)] jointly launched a scholarship programme to recognise students who have displayed talent in three key frontier areas – AI, sustainable finance and cross-border finance. The Scholarship Presentation Ceremony was successfully held today. This year, 18 students from diverse backgrounds were awarded scholarships, with three of them receiving the First Prize. 👏 Awardees wrote down their future career aspirations and placed them into a symbolic globe representing “Financing the World, Building the Future”, signifying the joint commitment of PolyU and CCB (Asia) to support young talent’s dreams. 🌍✨

【理大 x 中銀香港「築造未來」月球機械人設計比賽大成功🌕】

由理大與教育局合辦、中銀香港贊助的理大x中銀香港太空主題計劃「築造未來：國際月球科研站機械人」，旨在啟發中學生對太空科學及工程的興趣，實踐運用STEM知識。

計劃重點活動之一的「月球機械人設計比賽」頒獎典禮已於昨日舉行，現場近 200 位師生與專家出席，見證得獎學生團隊如何將創意帶到月球。本次比賽共吸引大灣區 52 間中學及國際學校參加。同學們發揮 STEM 知識與創意，設計具科研理據支持、能於月球南極進行科研探索的機械人方案 ，表現備受專家評審讚賞！

【PolyU x BOCHK "Building the Future: Robotics for the International Lunar Research Station” Lunar Robot Design Competition a Grand Success🌕】

Jointly organised by PolyU and the Education Bureau, and sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) (BOCHK), the PolyU x BOCHK space-themed programme "Building the Future: Robotics for the International Lunar Research Station" aims to inspire secondary school students' interest in space science and engineering while putting STEM knowledge into practice.

As one of the programme's flagship activities, the award presentation ceremony for the Lunar Robot Design Competition was held yesterday, bringing together nearly 200 experts, teachers, and students to witness how the winning teams brought their creativity all the way to the moon. The competition attracted 52 secondary and international schools across the Greater Bay Area. Combining STEM knowledge with innovation, students designed scientifically backed robot proposals for exploration of the lunar south pole, earning high praise from the expert panel of judges!

Big congratulations to the three winning teams🎊:
🥇 Champion: Pui Kiu College
Proposed a bionic hexapod robot designed to navigate complex terrain, complete with autonomous excavation and 3D printing capabilities to effectively support lunar infrastructure engineering.
🥈 First runner-up: Good Hope School
Designed a "multi-robot collaborative system" that utilises a base station, transport vehicle, and jumper detector to break through the limitations of a single robot through clear division of labor.
🥉 Second runner-up: Malvern College Hong Kong
Developed an exploration robot powered by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator. Equipped with a LiDAR system, it is tailor-made for long-term exploration and survey missions in the lunar south pole's permanently shadowed regions.

PolyU’s interdisciplinary teams have a proud track record of participating in major national space missions, including the Chang'e lunar exploration and Tianwen-1 Mars missions. Moving forward, PolyU will launch the PolyU Aerospace Research Academy this year to further solidify its world-class excellence in deep space exploration, promote science education, and dedicate itself to nurturing the next generation of aerospace talents for Hong Kong and the nation.

The Faculty of Business at PolyU is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme! 🎉 At the grand dinner, over 400 alumni, faculty members, industry partners and students gathered to explore the nurturing of scholar-leaders and future developments in the AI era. 🥂

We were honoured to have Mr Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government, as our guest of honour. He pointed out that in the age of AI, ethical judgement and creative problem-solving are increasingly important, and affirmed PolyU’s foresight in nurturing scholar-leaders over the past 30 years.

PolyU President Prof. Jin-Guang Teng and Prof. Edwin Cheng, Dean of the PolyU Faculty of Business, also emphasised that through the "Education 4.0" initiative, PolyU is harnessing AI and smart technologies to bring student-centred learning environment to the next level. Building on its internationally recognised research excellence in Management, the University will continue to lead the development of post-secondary education. Initiated by the Faculty of Engineering (FENG) and supported by the Industrial Centre (IC) and the University Research Facility in 3D Printing (U3DP), the “Dr Ching Yuen-kai – IC • U3DP • Product Innovation Prize 2025-26” was successfully held on 19 May 2026. This year’s shortlisted teams successfully transformed their knowledge into impactful inventions, perfectly demonstrating PolyU’s commitment to nurturing students' social responsibility and embracing innovation! 💡

Thoughtfully designed assistive tools for immobile patients, especially those with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neuron disease (MND), using technology to monitor patient breathing patterns and enhance patient safety.

雪旱持續威脅全球糧食安全？🌾❄️

隨着全球暖化，冬季降雪不足引發的「雪旱」日益頻繁。理大土地測量及地理資訊學系副教授、土地及空間研究院核心成員及沿海城市氣候韌性全國重點實驗室成員王碩教授團隊的最新研究刊登於權威期刊《自然食品》，揭示雪旱正嚴重威脅全球冬小麥產量。🚨

研究發現：
🔍北半球約 45%農地受顯著衝擊，缺乏積雪保溫及供水，令冬小麥面臨凍害與缺水雙重危機。
🔍增加施肥量反而會提高冬小麥對水分和積雪的依賴，一旦遇上雪旱，減產風險會被進一步放大。

💡理大團隊建議三大應對策略提升農業系統的氣候韌性：
1️⃣ 培育兼具抗寒及抗旱能力的作物品種
2️⃣ 推動更精準、可持續的養分管理系統
3️⃣ 將積雪監測納入農業風險評估與預警系統

Do snow droughts threaten global food security? 🌾❄️

As global warming continues, snow droughts caused by insufficient snowfall are becoming more frequent. A recent study led by Prof. Shuo Wang, Associate Professor of the PolyU Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, a core member of the Research Institute for Land and Space, and a member of the State Key Laboratory of Climate Resilience for Coastal Cities has been published in the international journal Nature Food, revealing that snow droughts are severely threatening the growth of global winter wheat yields. 🚨

Research findings:
🔍 Approximately 45% of croplands in the Northern Hemisphere experienced significant adverse impacts. The lack of insulating snow cover and moisture leaves the winter wheat vulnerable to the dual crisis of frost damage and water stress.
🔍 Increased fertiliser use actually makes winter wheat more dependent on the moisture and thermal insulation provided by snow cover. When a snow drought occurs, the risk of yield loss is further amplified.

💡 The PolyU research team recommends three key coping strategies to enhance the climate resilience of agricultural systems:
1️⃣ Develop crop varieties with both cold and drought tolerance
2️⃣ Shift to more precise and sustainable nutrient (fertiliser) management systems
3️⃣ Incorporate snow cover monitoring into agricultural risk assessment and early warning systems

【Prof. Chen Qingyan Elected Fellow of the Royal Society 】

Huge congratulations to Prof. Chen Qingyan, Director of the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR) and Chair Professor of Building Thermal Science, on being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, the UK's national academy of science.

As a globally recognised thought leader, Prof. Chen is renowned for his pioneering work in indoor air quality, aircraft cabin environments, and Computational Fluid Dynamics. His significant contributions have earned him recognition as one of the world’s leading scientists in the field of “Building and Construction”, with his models for simulating indoor environments playing an instrumental role in shaping public policy and driving innovation in ventilation systems. PolyU warmly congratulates Dr Lai Ka-ying, Hong Kong’s first payload specialist, on participating in the Shenzhou-23 manned spaceflight mission and becoming the first Hong Kong aerospace research professional to set foot in China’s Tiangong space station!
