Resonating with Creative Minds: A Retrospective of the Artist-in-Residence Programme at Lingnan University, 2006-2015
This exhibition, Resonating with Creative Minds, celebrates the ten-year anniversary of the Artist-in-Residence Programme which was inaugurated in the fall of 2006 with the financial support, help and advice from different individuals and organisations within and beyond Lingnan University. It illuminates the history and characteristics of this unique programme, while bringing alive artistic intera
ctions among the resident artists, students and audiences through the display of objects, images and exhibition catalogues. Noteworthy artistic productions on display include works in the University collection and loans from different parties. The nearly 50 artworks were produced by about 20 artists-in-residence and Visual Studies students, encompassing a wide range of media such as painting, printmaking, photography, video, sculpture, ceramics and installation. This group exhibition weaves the connections between the Lingnan community and about twenty resident artists from Hong Kong and abroad. Many of them find nature and everyday life their source of inspiration for producing thought-provoking, beautiful artworks. Having developed their individual styles and artistic expressions, our artists-in-residence simultaneously nurtured students’ creative abilities and mindfulness by offering training in studio practice and organising collaborative exhibitions during their residency at Lingnan. Their artistic talents and wide exposure to local and international art worlds have not only enhanced Lingnan students’ knowledge of and skills in artistic practices, but also stirred audiences’ interest in art appreciation, collecting and cultural mediation. As suggested in its title, Resonating with Creative Minds, we hope audiences of this exhibition will get inspired by the beautiful works, friendly relationships and the decisive impact developed from the Artist-in-Residence Programme. Objects on display are grouped into three sections: 1) Finding Inspiration in Nature; 2) Connecting Art with Life; and 3) Nurturing Artistic Pursuits, collectively showing related ideas and creative practices demonstrated in the works of our artists-in-residence and students. Now we invite you to join us to engage in the artistic dialogue, sharing your thought of sustaining the Artist-in-Residence Programme at Hong Kong’s only liberal arts university.
