TODAY is: Inters*x Solidarity Day 8th November - Herculine Barbin’s Birthday
Herculine Adélaîde Barbin was designated female at birth in rural France, 1838. She was raised and regarded as a girl and her family called her Alexina. She grew up poor, pious and studied in a convent. At age 17, she seemed to miss puberty, did not menstruate, remained flat chested, and would trim the hairs on her upper lip and cheeks. After a year of training, she became an assistant teacher in a girl's school, fell in love with another female teacher, and they became lovers.
DECLARATION OF THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF
THE ORGANISATION INTERSEX INTERNATIONAL
1) Inters*x is not a disorder of s*x development: inters*x refers to those individuals born of intermediate s*x - between what is considered standard for male or female in our societies.
2) Contrary to what is often asserted, the various degrees of inters*x are not innately an illness or deformity. They are simply variations of the human body similar to the length of the nose, the colour of eyes, etc.
3) We reject medical categories for the various degrees of inters*x, which are in fact only different reference points on a natural continuum of anatomical and genetic variations.
4) We stress the whole person from infancy through adulthood and choose not to focus on an individual's ge***alia. We are people, not ge***als. As people, we have a right to our own ge***alia and our own identity without interference, forced treatment or other coercion from legal and/or medical authorities.

It marks the birthday of Herculine Barbin, a French inters*x person whose memoirs were later published by Michel Foucault in Herculine Barbin: Being the Recently Discovered Memoirs of a Nineteenth-century French Hermaphrodite.
Between October 26 and November 8, inters*x organizations try to bring attention to the challenges inters*x individuals face, culminating in the Inters*x Day of Remembrance on the birthday of Herculine Barbin, also sometimes known as Inters*x Solidarity Day.

Alice Dreger works with people at the edge of anatomy, such as conjoined twins and inters*xed people. In her observation, it's often a fuzzy line between male and female, among other anatomical distinctions. Which brings up a huge question: Why do we let our anatomy determine our fate?
