A collaborative research team, including ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฎ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ from the Laboratory of Neuropsychology and Human Neuroscience, Department of Psychology at HKU, alongside researchers from Tsinghua University, has uncovered a hidden vulnerability in human-AI interactions.

Published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the study found that users were 5 to 8 times more likely to choose less favourable options when influenced by AI advice with a hidden agenda. Perhaps most concerningly, participants continued to perceive the AI as highly helpful and trustworthy, despite being subtly manipulated.

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, the findings underscore the urgent need for greater transparency, accountability, and governance in AI systems.
