Eleventh in the world, two years in a row! 🌍🏆

Research by Professor Benjamin Becker and Professor Paul Yip highlights how AI is becoming embedded in our social and emotional lives - especially among young people.

What stands out:
- How students use AI matters.
- Using AI for learning and problem-solving is linked to stronger cognitive development.
- Turning to AI for emotional support may be associated with poorer mental well-being.

As AI tools become woven into daily life, their influence extends far beyond technology - shaping how we think, feel, and relate to others.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 | 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 🌍

A groundbreaking study by the Faculty of Social Sciences at HKU, in collaboration with LSE, reveals that global migration has nearly tripled since 2000 - reaching around 35 million people per year in 2023.

Published in Nature, the research - co-authored by Professor Guy Abel from the Department of Sociology - introduces the first comprehensive annual dataset (1990–2023), using advanced deep learning to uncover patterns previously hidden in fragmented data.

Spanning regions from the Middle East to the Global South, the study highlights how human mobility is evolving and what drives it.

Key insights include:
📈 Migration is rising faster than global population growth
🌏 Major flows from South Asia to the Gulf region
🔄 Strong intra-regional movement across Europe
🌐 New visibility into migration trends in the Global South

From economic development to demographic change, the findings show that migration is shaped by long-term global shifts - not just crises.
