The new criteria are:

Knowledge and understanding (5 marks): Demonstrates understanding of the texts and their contexts, showing how context influences interpretation.

Analysis and evaluation (5 marks): Evaluates how literary features, genre, narrative technique, and structure shape meaning in the texts.

Comparative analysis (5 marks): Analyzes similarities and differences between textual features and broader authorial choices in the selected works.

Level 7 Tips in IB English Language & Literature

Aiming for a Level 7 in HL?

New Marking Scheme !!!

It's all about depth over breadth! The new criteria want sharp analysis, not just feature-spotting. Here’s the cheat sheet:

1. Thesis is EVERYTHING: Your entire essay must be driven by one argumentative, debatable statement. Every paragraph should prove it.

2. Analyse the FUNCTION, not just the feature: Don't just say "the poet uses a metaphor." Explain how that metaphor shapes meaning and builds the author's argument.

3. Paper 1 (Unseen): Spend the first 15 mins crafting a strong thesis and plan. Your interpretation is key!

4. Paper 2 (Comparative): Integrate your comparison! Don't write half about one text and half about the other. Compare within paragraphs using "whereas," "similarly," and "in contrast."

6. Individual Oral: Pick a narrow, truly global issue. Your extracts should be packed with meaning to analyse. Practice to sound natural, not robotic.

Top Tip: Always ask yourself "Why?" Why did the author make that specific choice? What is the effect on the reader? This is the key to a Level 7.

The Individual Oral (IO) can feel overwhelming, but it boils down to three key elements:

1. A Clear Line of Inquiry: Your global issue must be specific, significant, and thread through your entire talk.
2. Balanced Analysis: Don't just describe! You must analyse how both your literary and non-literary bodies of work make meaning about the global issue. (Think: diction, imagery, structure, tone).
3. Smooth Delivery: Practice, practice, practice. Know your notes well enough to speak confidently, not just read.
