Most classical musicians don’t lack discipline.

They’re just practicing the wrong way.

You can spend hours on your instrument and still feel stuck — not because you’re not working hard, but because mindless repetition doesn’t create real progress.
The musicians who improve faster don’t necessarily practice more.
They practice with clarity, intention, and strategy.
If your practice feels frustrating or inconsistent, it’s usually not a time problem — it’s a method problem.
Start shifting from:
“How long did I practice?”
to
“How effective was my practice?”
That’s where real improvement begins.

One question from my professor changed everything about how I play.

I was a teen, working on a Villa‑Lobos prelude at the conservatory, when he stopped me mid‑phrase and asked:
“You play beautifully… but why do you play it like that? What’s the idea behind it?”

I had no answer. I had been playing that piece for months — and I had absolutely no idea why.

That was the moment I stopped copying and started thinking like a musician.

Now, at Inspiro Music Conservatoire in Wong Chuk Hang, I ask my students the same question:

“Why do you play it this way?”

The answer to that question can take you further than years of practice alone

教授當年的一個問題，徹底改變了我對演奏的理解。

那時我十幾歲，在音樂學院練著一首魏拉‑羅伯士的前奏曲。教授突然停下來，問了一句：
「你彈得很美⋯⋯但為什麼要這樣彈？背後的想法是什麼？」

我答不出來。那首曲子我彈了好幾個月——卻從沒想過為什麼。

從那一刻起，我不再只是模仿，而是開始像個真正的音樂家那樣思考。

如今，在黃竹坑的 Inspiro Music Conservatoire，我也會問我的學生同一個問題:

「為什麼這樣彈？」

這個問題的答案，可以帶你走得更遠——比單靠埋頭苦練許多年還要遠。
