Mindfulness Matters! 🐸 is the fun and engaging way to bring
Mindfulness to kids.

How I hear you ask!
✅ Kids learn to be aware of their bodies and the signals they send
✅ They learn to use their breath to when they feel triggered
✅ They learn to listen to their thoughts and feelings before acting out
✅ They learn to surf the waves of life... with the help of the little frog

Over the past few years, I've been teaching mindfulness to Primary school students at Li Sing Tai Hang School here in Hong Kong. 🌟 Time and time again when I visit the school, students will share their stories of how mindfulness has been helping them.

💓 “Miss Angie, the little frog you gave me sits on my desk at home and he reminds me to stop and breathe when I am studying."
💓 “Miss Angie, I was so stressed studying for my chinese exam but I remember to stop and feel my body and breathing. It really helps me to calm down and not be so stressed."

💡These stories reveal what is true to the children, how they can be aware of and curious about what is happening in their inner world.

🧘🏻‍♀️🧘🏻Mindfulness can be fun and engaging for all age groups. Children don't need to sit still to be mindful, but we can ask them to be interested in what it's like to try and what happens when you can sit still for a little while...

So how can teachers, parents, and therapists learn how to make it fun and engaging?

💫 Join our world renowned teacher training program and learn through experiential and engaging participation how to teach Mindfulness Matters - the Method Eline Snel 🌿🐸 mindfulness for children program.

🐍 Here we are again, at the beginning of another new year. This time we celebrate a cycle of renewal and transformation with the year of the Wood Snake. It is said that the wood snake is a "snake coming out of the hole". Coming out to renew with the strength, solidity and support of our wood nature, we can find ourselves on steady ground as we transform. 🌳
Just like the beautiful flower emerging from inside the old and steady tree, (click in the newsletter link👇) we too can blossom as we open ourselves in this new year. I hope you use nature and the environment as your support, or perhaps your guide, in discovering what renewal and transformation may look like to you. It doesn't need to be big, and good intentions can be a way to begin. "From little things big things grow" as the saying goes.
Renewal in our offerings
After a long pause I am excited to once again offer the Teaching Training for the Mindfulness for Children program Mindfulness Matters! Through the Academy for Mindful Teaching Asia we will conduct the 6-day teacher training program commencing in March. This time we will be online as we invite more friends and interested educators, play therapists, mental health professionals and parents to join us from throughout the world.

Recently Jon Kabat-Zinn shared something that I really connected with; "mindfulness has never been more relevant as it is now...it is medicine and healing for planet earth. We need mindfulness and compassion to take care of this earth".
Children and young people are the most impacted by how we care for this earth, how we care for nature, our environments and ultimately how we care each other. I know that when we can help instil the qualities of attention, awareness, trust, acceptance, love and compassion in children from a young age, they will naturally be compassionate and mindful as they grow and attend to the needs of their communities, planet earth and themselves.

💚World Mental Health Day today 💚I did a little to help out with awareness raising in Central. This fabulous annual event hosted by Minal Mahtani from OCD & Anxiety Hong Kong is committed to raising awareness and support for those suffering from Mental health challenges in HK. It was an eye opener for me and this is what I learned

🔍 we still have so much to do to raise awareness and elimate stigma. I found many people avoiding or shying away when approached or hearing the invitation to support world mental health day. There is much work to do💙

💡 never again will I just walk by and ignore someone who is raising awareness for a cause. I hope I can be curious when this happens.

I take with me some good memories, meeting lovely people with good intentions and this green ribbon badge - below
I will wear this badge for our Pause and Relax mindfulness retreat this weekend with Gen Heng and Eva - as a reminder to all of us present that mental health and well-being is important all the time and should be talked about.
Will you support mental health awareness today?

06/10/2024

💚 October 10 is World Mental Health Day – a day dedicated to raising awareness of mental health issues faced by millions of people of all ages throughout our world. Interestingly, mental health awareness periods are scattered throughout the year, which frankly is a good thing. There is still stigma, there is still non-acceptance, and there is still much work that needs to be done to support those in need. I admire Mind HK's motto - "We are here to ensure no one in Hong Kong has to face a mental health problem alone".

As someone who has suffered mental health issues in the past, I know that we should not suffer and face this alone, yet so many of us do. I am offering a path where - with the support of a skilled and dedicated teacher, and a safe and supportive container of the group - everyone is invited to help and care for themselves as they learn to move away from automatic patterns of fear, withdrawal, rumination and dwelling, and open to understanding, acceptance and compassion. 👇

Sadly what we do most of the time to move us away from our mental health challenges, can actually exacerbate the issues we face, and are designed to stop us from being alone with our thoughts and feelings. Pausing seems to move our mind toward the causes of our stress and anxiety and most people would rather avoid this. Yet we know that keeping the brain busy all the time isn’t an effective form of relief or therapy. What we do need is to feel, sense, or “sense foraging” as the great Norman Farb and Zindel Segal share in this article. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/sep/30/the-big-idea-how-to-use-your-senses-to-help-beat-depression?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
They speak about the power of allowing ourselves to rest awareness in our 5 senses, as good for our health and well-being.
Here is a little excerpt - do have a read it makes for a thoughtful and present Sunday 🧠 and then get outside and let your senses experience 🌿

"...what if trying to busy yourself during those quiet moments did more harm than good? At this point, you may be thinking “Why not fill up my spare time with things I enjoy?” The problem is that keeping our brains busy isn’t an effective form of relief. Instead, sensing the world – the sunlight on your skin, a gurgle in your belly, the thump of your heartbeat – without rushing back into thought and judgment, is what enriches and restores us......Because when we are unable to stay with raw sensation, defaulting instead to ideas about those sensations, it can actually have disastrous consequences for our mental health."

MBSR is the path I referred to above and includes the form of "sense foraging" mentioned here. By updating our ability to sense and feel - strengthening our sensory muscles, we are also able to update the cognitive "software" of the brain, offering it new experiences that can help us out of our mental health challenges. ...more in this newsletter...
