The future belongs to the storytellers, the innovators and the critical thinkers.

At West Island School, we cultivate the forward-thinking work ethic and creative confidence that prepare our future changemakers to thrive in dynamic global industries.

Dr Young’s impressive journey as a multi-award-winning writer is a powerful testament to what happens when a young person’s passions are fully encouraged and nurtured with a personalised pathway.

A thank you to Dr Young for returning to our campus and sharing her successful journey in her higher education pursuit and professional development. It was great to see our students asking meaningful questions to prepare for their future steps.

This week, our students dove into their exciting Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL) projects. Our Year 7 students explored how arts and language express cultural and personal identity.

Collaborating with Creative Arts and Modern Foreign Language teachers, students researched their heritage to compose music, write lyrics, create art and build websites showcasing their unique stories. They engaged in hands-on, student-centred inquiry that extended far beyond the classroom walls.

At West Island School, the important lessons are found in ‘courage’.

Through meeting Benedict Allen, our Year 7 and 8 students drew direct connections between real-world survival and the IB Learner Profile attributes they practice in their own learning.

By hearing the story of his 3,600-mile solo trek, they identified how risk-taking, resilience and being an open-minded inquirer are essential for their own journeys.

Thank you, Benedict Allen and the Royal Geographical Society , for fueling our students’ curiosity and helping us cultivate the adventurers of tomorrow.

📚 Where Books Come to Life!

Our Character Dress-up Day was nothing short of magical! From the library to the staff room, our learning spaces were filled with the stories we love.

It’s clear that a passion for literature runs deep in our community—our teachers and staff stepped straight out of the pages alongside our students. We are proud to see that everyone is passionate about expressing imagination.

This photo album highlights the amazing dress-ups, the creative DIY costumes, and the incredible school spirit that made the day so special. Swipe through to see if you can spot your favourite character!

I&S Parent-Student Presentations on Home Investigation

We were delighted to welcome Year 7 parents into school recently for a series of engaging presentations, where students proudly shared their learning from their Individuals and Societies home investigations alongside their parents.

Throughout the unit, students completed a range of real-world tasks across Hong Kong, including exploring places of worship, navigating the MTR, comparing food systems and visiting historical and cultural sites. Each task was designed to develop Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills and IB Learner Profile attributes, encouraging students to become balanced, reflective and confident risk-takers.

Students and parents presented together, reflecting on their learning journey as a team. For example, one group explained how visiting a wet market helped them understand food systems and how global supply chains connect Hong Kong to the wider world. Students made thoughtful links to the curriculum, connecting their experiences to key concepts such as culture, global interactions and sustainability. It was fantastic to see such confident communication and a powerful connection between classroom knowledge and real-life experiences.

On the evening of 16 April, our Year 11 students and families gathered to celebrate the successful conclusion of their Pre-16 journey. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on their achievements before they transition to Post-16 studies this August. As they now head into a crucial period of revision, we wish them the very best of luck with their upcoming (I)GCSE and BTEC Level 2 exams.
